About High Rock Lake

High Rock Lake is the second largest lake in North Carolina. Only Lake Norman is bigger! This huge lake covers about 15,180 acres (which is about 61.4 square kilometers) of water. It also has a very long shoreline, stretching for about 365 miles (587 kilometers). Imagine all the places you could explore along its edges!

Where is High Rock Lake?

This lake is found in the central part of North Carolina. It sits between Davidson and Rowan counties. The lake starts where two rivers, the Yadkin River and the South Yadkin River, meet. This meeting point is called a confluence.

How High Rock Lake Got Its Name

The lake's name comes from a nearby landmark called "High Rock Mountain." This mountain is the tallest peak in the Uwharrie Mountains. So, the lake was named after this impressive natural feature.

Who Manages the Lake?

Currently, the Alcoa company is in charge of managing and operating High Rock Lake. They make sure the lake is used properly for its main purposes, like generating electricity.
