Tanagra pileata (protonym)

The hooded tanager (Nemosia pileata) is a colorful bird. It belongs to the tanager family. You can find this bird in many countries across South America. These include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela.

Where the Hooded Tanager Lives

The hooded tanager loves to live in warm, wet places. Its favorite habitats are forests in low-lying areas. It also lives in mangrove forests, which are special forests that grow in salty water. Sometimes, you can even find them in areas where forests used to be, but have changed a lot.

What's in a Name?

The hooded tanager got its scientific name a long time ago. A French scientist named Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon first described it in 1779. He saw a bird from Cayenne, French Guiana.

Later, in 1783, a Dutch scientist named Pieter Boddaert gave it the name Tanagra pileata. The word pileata comes from Latin. It means "capped," like wearing a cap. This name likely refers to the bird's distinctive head feathers.

Today, the hooded tanager is in the group, or genus, called Nemosia. This name comes from an Ancient Greek word. It means "glade" or "dell," which is a small, grassy valley.

Different Kinds of Hooded Tanagers

Just like people from different parts of the world can look a little different, birds of the same species can too. These slightly different groups are called subspecies. Scientists recognize six different subspecies of the hooded tanager:

  • N. p. hypoleuca – Found in northern Colombia and northern Venezuela.
  • N. p. surinamensis – Lives in Guyana and Suriname.
  • N. p. pileata – This is the original type. It lives from French Guiana through central Brazil to northern Bolivia.
  • N. p. interna – Found in north central Brazil.
  • N. p. nana – Lives in northeastern Peru and western Brazil.
  • N. p. caerulea – You can find this one in eastern and southern Brazil. It also lives in southeastern Peru, eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, and northern Argentina.
