How to Play Gory Games
Gory Games is hosted by comedian Dave Lamb and Rattus Rattus. Rattus is a rat puppet who also "hosts" the main Horrible Histories show. The game is all about learning "horrible facts" from history!
Getting Year Spheres
Three child contestants, called "Horrible Historians," play the game. Their goal is to win "Year Spheres." They get these spheres by completing challenges or answering quizzes.
Each Year Sphere holds a special year. This year is either A.D. (after Jesus's birth) or B.C. (before Jesus's birth). If it's an A.D. year, it adds to the player's score. If it's a B.C. year, it takes away from their score. The player with the highest score after three rounds wins!
Game Categories and Questions
The games are split into six fun categories:
- "Brainy"
- "Messy"
- "Scary"
- "Silly"
- "Gory"
- "Death" (this one is even hosted by Death himself!)
Quiz questions can be multiple-choice or true-or-false. Dave, Rattus, or even a historical character might ask them. Sometimes, they use special props for questions too.
Historical Eras You'll Explore
Just like the main Horrible Histories show, the games are set in different historical times. These eras come from Terry Deary's original books. Some of the eras you might visit in Gory Games include:
- Awful Egyptians
- Rotten Romans
- Measly Middle Ages
- Terrible Tudors
- Vile Victorians
- Vicious Vikings
- Groovy Greeks
- Savage Stone Age
- Slimy Stuarts
- Nasty Knights
- Putrid Pirates
- Gorgeous Georgians
- Frightful First World War
- Awesome USA
- Incredible Incas
The Time Sewer
From Series 3 onwards, the two players who don't win have a special way to go home. They slide down the "Time Sewer"! This is a slide that leads into a tank of thick, brown gunge. They even go barefoot when they get gunged!
Special Guests
Actors from the main Horrible Histories show often appear. They play historical characters who ask questions. Even Horrible Histories author Terry Deary sometimes makes a cameo!
Year Sphere Dates: A Glimpse into History
The "Year Spheres" in Gory Games contain many real historical dates. These dates cover a huge range of time, from millions of years B.C. to more recent A.D. events. For example, some dates might include:
- 2.5 Million B.C. - When humans started using tools.
- 1.5 Million B.C. - When humans discovered fire.
- 753 B.C. - When the city of Rome was founded.
- 79 A.D. - The destruction of Pompeii.
- 1492 A.D. - When Christopher Columbus discovered America.
- 1666 A.D. - The Great Fire of London.
- 1914 A.D. - The start of World War I.
These dates help players learn about important moments in history.
