Huizen (pronounced [ˈɦœyzə(n)]) is a town and a municipality in the North Holland province of the Netherlands. Its name means "houses" in Dutch. People believe it got this name because it was one of the first places in the area to have stone houses, unlike the usual sod houses back then. Huizen is also part of the bigger Amsterdam area.

The Story of Huizen
Huizen started as a farming village near the Zuiderzee, which was a sea until 1932. In winter, farmers would go fishing. This led to the village slowly changing from a farming community to a coastal one. A busy fishing industry grew, especially after a harbour was built around 1850.
After the Zuiderzee was dammed in 1932, the sea became a lake. Because of this, Huizen's economy changed. It moved away from fishing and focused more on factories and businesses. In the 1960s, the town was chosen to build many new homes. This was to help with a housing shortage in the area. Since then, many people moved to Huizen, and the village grew very quickly.
Before World War II, there was a large radio transmitter where the Phohi-flat now stands in Huizen. This transmitter was used to contact the Dutch East Indies, which was about 12,000 kilometers away. There was also a type of windmill called a post mill in Huizen. It was taken apart in 1916. Later, in 1919, it was put back together at the Netherlands Open Air Museum in Arnhem, Gelderland.
