Exploring Hunts Point's Past
Hunts Point has an interesting history. On March 13, 1890, a man named Leigh S. J. Hunt bought the land that would become Hunts Point. He lived nearby in Yarrow Point. Mr. Hunt wanted to cut down the tall evergreen trees that blocked his view of Lake Washington.
Around 1900, a bank took over the property. They sold it to a group of men from Seattle. These men used Hunts Point as a quiet place for family picnics on Sundays and for summer camping trips.
Travel Before Bridges
Before big floating bridges were built across Lake Washington, getting to Seattle was different. People used to travel by ferry. One of these ferries was called the Gazelle. It would arrive at a spot called Cozy Cove every morning at 7:15 a.m. This cove is located between Hunts Point and Yarrow Point.
Community Life and Growth
In 1913, a clubhouse was built on Hunts Point Road. This clubhouse became the main place for social events in the town throughout the 1920s. Also in 1913, the women of Hunts Point started a group to help others. It was first called The Eastside Circle of the Seattle Fruit and Flower Mission. Today, it is known as The Overlake Service League and still helps the community.
Hunts Point officially became a city on August 22, 1955. In 1957, an area called Fairweather Basin, which used to be marshland, was turned into homes. The town got its first sewers in 1960. A major event was the opening of the first Evergreen Point Floating Bridge on August 28, 1963. This bridge made it much easier to travel between Hunts Point and Seattle. Later, in 1988, the Wetherill Nature Preserve was created when some land was donated to the town.
In the 1950s, a famous boat owner named Stan Sayres kept his powerful racing boat, the Slo Mo unlimited hydroplane, at the end of Hunts Point Road.
