Inorganic compound facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

An inorganic compound is a special type of chemical compound. It's different because it usually doesn't have carbon–hydrogen bonds. Think of it as a compound that isn't based on carbon in the same way organic compounds are.

What are inorganic compounds?

The difference between inorganic and organic compounds can sometimes be a bit tricky. Some compounds that contain carbon are still considered inorganic. For example, carbon dioxide is inorganic, even though it has carbon.

Many important chemicals in nature are not compounds at all, but tiny charged particles called ions. Things like sodium, chloride, and phosphate ions are super important for living things. Also, some simple inorganic molecules like nitrogen, water, and oxygen are essential for life on Earth.

Almost all other compounds you learn about in biochemistry (the study of chemicals in living things) contain carbon. These are usually called organic or organometallic compounds.

Common types of inorganic compounds

Inorganic compounds can be found everywhere around us. Here are some main types:

  • Minerals: These are natural solids found in the Earth. Examples include salt (like the salt you eat), asbestos, and silicates (which are in rocks and sand).
  • Alloys: These are mixtures of metals. Think of brass (a mix of copper and zinc) or bronze (a mix of copper and tin).
  • Compounds with non-metals: Many compounds made from elements like silicon, phosphorus, chlorine, and oxygen are inorganic. The most common example is water!
