Playing for Clubs: Jaroslav's Journey
Starting Out: Early Career in France
Jaroslav Plašil joined Monaco in 2000 when he was 18 years old. In his first two years, he didn't play much, starting only 8 matches. Because of this, he was loaned to Créteil, a club in Ligue 2 (the second-highest league in France).
After playing well at Créteil, Plašil returned to Monaco in 2003. For the next four years, he was a regular player in the team. He had a fantastic time during the 2003–04 season. In that year, Monaco reached the final of the UEFA Champions League, which is one of the biggest club competitions in Europe. Plašil even scored a goal in Monaco's huge 8–3 win against Deportivo La Coruña during that amazing season.
Playing in Spain: Osasuna Years
On August 25, 2007, Jaroslav Plašil moved to Spain. He signed a four-year contract with CA Osasuna, a team in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league. The transfer cost €2.25 million.
He played his first game for Osasuna on September 16. He came into the game for the last 19 minutes in a 0–0 draw against FC Barcelona. Plašil scored his first goal for the team on December 2. It was a left-foot volley that helped them win 2–1 against Deportivo de La Coruña. A few days later, he scored his first goal at their home stadium, the Reyno de Navarra Stadium. He ended that season with four goals in 35 games.
In October 2008, Plašil was sent off in a game against Racing de Santander. He still managed to score four goals in 32 games that season. His last goal for Osasuna was an equalizer in a 2–1 home win against Real Madrid in May 2009.
Back to France: Success with Bordeaux
On June 9, 2009, Jaroslav Plašil returned to France. He signed a four-year deal with Bordeaux, who were the French champions at the time. The transfer was worth about €3 million. He made his debut for Bordeaux when they won the 2009 Trophée des Champions, an early-season trophy.
A big moment for Plašil came on May 31, 2013. He was the captain of Bordeaux when they won the 2013 Coupe de France Final. They beat Evian 3–2 in the final match at the Stade de France.
In September 2013, Plašil went on loan to Catania, a club in Serie A, Italy's top league. He played 29 games for the team from Sicily. He scored his first goal for them on September 29, helping them win 2–0 against Chievo. This was Catania's first win of the season.
In June 2017, Plašil extended his contract with Bordeaux for another year. He retired from playing football in July 2019, at the age of 37. Right after retiring, he joined the coaching staff for Bordeaux's reserve team.
Playing for His Country: Czech Republic
Jaroslav Plašil played his first game for the senior Czech Republic squad on March 31, 2004. He came on as a substitute in a friendly match against the Republic of Ireland.
In his very next game, on June 2, he scored his first goal for his country. It was in a 3–1 friendly win against Bulgaria. He was chosen to play in UEFA Euro 2004 in Portugal. His team reached the semi-finals of the tournament. He played in one game, a 2–1 win against Germany, which helped eliminate Germany from the competition.
Plašil started all three of the Czech Republic's group games at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. This was the first World Cup for the Czech Republic since their country split. They were eliminated from the tournament by Italy, who went on to win the World Cup.
He played 13 games during the qualification for UEFA Euro 2008. He scored a goal in a 3–0 win against Germany in October 2007. This win helped his team qualify for the finals in Austria and Switzerland. In the main tournament, Plašil started every game in Group A. He scored a goal to put the Czechs 2–0 up against Turkey in their last group game. However, they ended up losing 3–2 and were eliminated.

Plašil played every minute of the Czech Republic's games at UEFA Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine. His team was eliminated in the quarter-finals after losing 1–0 to Portugal. He was called up for his fourth European Championship when he was selected for UEFA Euro 2016 in France. Before the tournament, on June 5, he played his 100th game for his country. This special game was a 2–1 home friendly loss to South Korea. He started all three group matches at the tournament, but the Czech national team was eliminated after two losses and one draw.
