Jason Nicholas Doig was born on January 29, 1977. He is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. Jason played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for several teams. These teams included the Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, New York Rangers, and Washington Capitals. He was known as a strong defenceman.

About Jason Doig's Early Life

Jason Doig was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His parents, Michael and Paula Doig, moved to Canada from Jamaica. They came to study at universities. His mother went to McGill University, and his father attended Concordia University.

Jason grew up in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, a suburb near Montreal. He went to St. Charles Elementary School. Later, he attended West Island College for high school. He also studied at Vanier College. Besides hockey, Jason was a talented soccer player. He played for the West Island Lakers soccer club. He was even invited to play for Team Quebec in soccer.

When he was young, Jason played in the 1991 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. He played for the North Shore minor ice hockey team.

Jason Doig's Hockey Career

Jason Doig showed great skill in hockey from a young age. He played for the North Shore hockey team. Then he joined the Lac St-Louis Lions in the Quebec Midget AAA Hockey League.

Starting in Junior Hockey

In 1993-94, Jason made his debut in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He played for the St-Jean Lynx. That same year, he helped Team Quebec win a gold medal. This was at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. He scored the tying and winning goals in the final game against Team USA. The next year, he played for Team Canada. They won a gold medal at the World Under-18 Tournament in Mexico City.

In 1995, the Winnipeg Jets picked Jason in the NHL Entry Draft. He was the 34th player chosen overall. He had scored 55 points and had 259 penalty minutes. This was while playing for the Laval Titan's in the QMJHL. He also played in the Canadian Hockey League all-star game.

Winning Championships in Junior Hockey

In 1996, Jason returned to the QMJHL. He led the Granby Predateurs to win the President's Cup. He also won the Guy Lafleur Trophy as the playoff MVP. After that, his team won the Memorial Cup Championship. Jason was named a first-team all-star at the Memorial Cup. That same year, he was the team captain for the West Team at the QMJHL all-star game.

The next year, Jason was part of Team Canada. They won the gold medal at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Switzerland.

Playing in the NHL and AHL

Jason Doig played for the Winnipeg Jets when he was just 18 years old in the 1995-96 season. He stayed with the team when they moved to Arizona in 1996-97. They became the Phoenix Coyotes.

In March 1999, he was traded to the New York Rangers. He played for the Rangers and also for their minor league team. This team was the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolf Pack. With the Wolf Pack, he won a Calder Cup in 2000. He played two seasons in the New York Rangers organization. Then he was traded to the Ottawa Senators. He played one season with their AHL team, the Grand Rapids Griffins.

In 2002-03, Jason joined the Washington Capitals. He became a strong defenceman for the team. He spent the early part of that season with their AHL team, the Portland Pirates.

After the NHL had a lockout season, Jason signed with the Vancouver Canucks. He played for their AHL team, the Manitoba Moose.

Playing Overseas

In the 2006–2007 season, Jason played in Russia for Traktor Chelyabinsk. He finished that season in Switzerland with the Langnau SCL Tigers. That same year, Jason played for Team Canada again. They won a Silver Medal at the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland.

In the 2007–2008 season, he played in Switzerland for EHC Basel. Later, he signed with the Norwegian team Stavanger Oilers. After his team was out of the playoffs, Jason Doig announced his retirement from hockey.

Life After Hockey

After retiring from hockey in 2007, Jason Doig started a new career. He became a principal at Park Lane, an investment bank in Los Angeles. He focused on the hockey business side there.

While at Park Lane, Jason started his own company called TreeVestors. This company invests in projects that develop and finance environmentally friendly carbon forestry. These projects help the environment.

Currently, Jason Doig works as a Regional Sales Coordinator for Aflac. Aflac is a large company that provides supplemental employee benefits. Jason lives in Los Angeles with his three children.
