Early Life and Education
Jessie Ware was born in Hammersmith, London, on 15 October 1984. She grew up in Clapham, London. Her mother, Helena (known as Lennie), is a social worker, and her father, John Ware, was a BBC Panorama reporter. Her parents divorced when she was 10 years old. Jessie is the younger sister of English actress Hannah Ware.
Her mother was very supportive of her music career. Jessie calls her mother her "hero" because she raised her and her siblings with "so much love and fun." She always told Jessie she could achieve anything she wanted. Jessie's mother is Jewish, and Jessie was raised in that faith.
Jessie Ware attended Alleyn's School in Dulwich, South London. There, she was classmates with other future artists like Florence Welch (from Florence and the Machine) and Jack Peñate. After school, she studied English literature at the University of Sussex. Before becoming a full-time singer, Ware worked briefly as a journalist for The Jewish Chronicle and The Daily Mirror. She also worked behind the scenes at a TV company.
Music Career Highlights
Starting Out in Music (2009–2011)
Before releasing her own music, Jessie Ware sang backing vocals for artists like Jack Peñate and Man Like Me at live shows. She even toured the U.S. with Jack Peñate. Ware said this experience was great training. It allowed her to perform live without the pressure of being the main singer. This helped her prepare for her solo career.
One of Peñate's bandmates introduced Ware to SBTRKT. They worked together on the song "Nervous" in 2010. She then met Sampha, who was SBTRKT's main collaborator. Jessie and Sampha created the song "Valentine" together. It was released on a special heart-shaped vinyl in 2011. These collaborations led Jessie Ware to sign a record deal with PMR Records. She also sang on Ceremonials, an album by Florence and the Machine in 2011.
On 14 October 2011, Ware released her first solo song, "Strangest Feeling." It was a limited edition on purple vinyl.
