Jhang is a big city in central Punjab, Pakistan. It sits on the east side of the Chenab river. Jhang is one of the largest cities in Pakistan, with many people calling it home.

What's in a Name?

The full historical name for the city and its area is Jhang Sial. The word "Jhang" comes from an old language called Sanskrit. In Sanskrit, jāṅgala means a rough or forested area. You might notice that the word "Jungle" comes from the same root! "Jhang Sial" means "the land of the Sials", who were an important tribe in the area.

A Look Back in Time

The city of Jhang was founded in the year 1288. It was built by a leader named Rai Sial, who belonged to the Sial tribe. His family and tribe ruled this region for a very long time.

The Sial rulers were very powerful. Their land stretched far and wide, covering areas like Chiniot, Kamalia, and Kabirwala. They even controlled parts of Bhakkar and Sargodha.

Later, during the time of the British Raj (when the British ruled India), the towns of Jhang and Mighiana joined together. They were about 2 kilometers apart. This combined area became known as Jhang-Maghiana.

Where is Jhang?

Jhang Sadr is located at a specific point on the map: 31.27 degrees north and 72.33 degrees east. It is about 158 meters above sea level.

The city is on the east bank of the Chenab river. The Chenab river meets another river, the Jhelum, at a place called Trimmu Barrage. In 2014, there were big floods in India and Pakistan. Jhang was in danger, but the floodwaters were sent in another direction, so the city was safe.

There are three rivers that are close to Jhang: the Chenab river, the Jhelum river, and the Ravi river, which touches the edge of Jhang District near Ahmadpur Sial. The older part of Jhang city is in the lower areas near the river, while Maghiana is on higher ground, looking over the Chenab valley.

People of Jhang

Jhang has grown a lot over the years! In 1998, about 293,366 people lived in the city. By 2017, the population had grown to 414,131 people. This shows a big increase in just 19 years.

Most people in Jhang follow the Islamic faith. However, throughout history, people of different religions have lived here. In the past, there were many Hindus and Sikhs living in Jhang, along with a smaller number of Christians. Today, Jhang is a diverse city with people from various backgrounds.
