Playing Career
Early Hockey Days
When Jiří Tlustý was young, he played in a big hockey tournament called the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament in 2002. He played with a team from his hometown of Chomutov.
While playing for HC Kladno in the Czech Republic, Tlustý was chosen by the Toronto Maple Leafs. This happened in the first round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, where he was the 13th player picked overall. A few weeks later, on July 14, he signed a three-year contract with the Maple Leafs.
He started his professional career with the Toronto Marlies, which is the Maple Leafs' minor league team. He scored three goals and one assist in his first six games. However, on October 23, he was sent to play for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds to gain more experience in major junior hockey.
Junior Hockey Challenges
Tlustý played for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) during the 2006–07 season. Early in his OHL career, he got a high-ankle sprain. This injury kept him from playing for almost six weeks. It also meant he could not join the Czech junior team for the 2007 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
Tlustý returned to the Greyhounds in January 2007. He finished his first OHL season with 13 goals and 21 assists in 37 games. With Tlustý back, the Greyhounds played well and won their first playoff series. They then faced the London Knights and lost in a close seven-game series. Tlustý played very well in the playoffs, scoring nine goals and eight assists in just 13 games.
Starting in the NHL
Before the 2007–08 season, Tlustý joined the Maple Leafs' training camp. He played in five pre-season games and recorded one assist. He made the team's final roster cuts but was sent back to the AHL. After playing five games in the AHL, he was called up to the NHL for the first time.
On October 25, he played his first NHL game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He scored two goals in that game. His first goal bounced off him and into the net. Just 35 seconds later, he scored again with a wrist shot. He got his first NHL assist on November 2. He started wearing jersey number 41 but later switched to number 11.

On January 15, 2009, Tlustý had his best NHL game for points, getting three assists against the Carolina Hurricanes. The next month, on February 18, he was sent back to the Marlies. In one game against the Syracuse Crunch, Tlustý scored five goals on only five shots. This set a new record for the Marlies team.
On March 4, still with the Marlies, Tlustý set another team record. He had two goals and four assists for six points in a 6–4 win against the Providence Bruins.
Moving to Carolina and Beyond
On December 3, 2009, Tlustý was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. He scored his first goal for the Hurricanes on December 11, 2009, in his very first game with the team. On July 1, 2010, he signed a one-year contract with Carolina. He signed another one-year contract with them on July 1, 2011.
Tlustý had his best season in 2011–12, scoring 18 goals and 36 points. After that, he signed a new two-year contract with the Hurricanes.
He set new career highs again in the 2012–13 season, scoring 23 goals and 38 points. This season was shorter due to a lockout. Tlustý played very well alongside NHL All-Stars Eric Staal and Alexander Semin. He finished tied for fifth in goal-scoring in the NHL that season.
On February 25, 2015, Tlustý was traded to the Winnipeg Jets. This happened during the 2014–15 season, as his contract was ending and the Hurricanes were not going to make the playoffs.
On September 16, 2015, Tlustý signed a one-year contract with the New Jersey Devils. In the 2015–16 season, he had injuries and did not score many points. He recorded 2 goals and 4 points in 30 games.
After that, he was a free agent. On September 20, 2016, Tlustý tried out for the Colorado Avalanche. However, he was released because he could not pass their medical and physical tests. On October 31, 2016, Tlustý signed a try-out contract with Oulun Kärpät in Finland. He played 14 games there before being released on December 12, 2016, due to ongoing injuries.
