Jiří Tlustý's Hockey Journey
Starting Out in Hockey
When Jiří was young, he played in the famous Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament in 2002. He was part of a team from Chomutov, Czech Republic.
While playing for HC Kladno in his home country, Jiří was picked by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 13th player chosen overall! A few weeks later, he signed his first professional contract with the Maple Leafs.
He started his professional career with the Toronto Marlies, the Maple Leafs' minor league team. He quickly scored three goals and one assist in just six games. Later, he joined the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds to play major junior hockey.
Playing for the Greyhounds
Jiří played for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) during the 2006–07 season. He got a high-ankle sprain injury that kept him off the ice for almost six weeks. This injury also stopped him from playing for the Czech junior team in the 2007 World Junior Championships.
Jiří returned to the Greyhounds in January 2007. He finished his first OHL season with 13 goals and 21 assists in 37 games. In the playoffs, he was amazing, scoring nine goals and eight assists in only 13 games!
Becoming a Pro Player
Before the 2007–08 season, Jiří played well in the Maple Leafs' training camp. He made his first NHL appearance on October 25, 2007, against the Pittsburgh Penguins. In that game, he scored two goals! His first goal bounced off his back and into the net. Just 35 seconds later, he scored another goal with a wrist shot.
On January 15, 2009, Jiří had a great game against the Carolina Hurricanes, getting three assists. The next month, while playing for the Marlies again, he scored five goals in one game! This set a new record for the Marlies team. He also set another record with six points (two goals and four assists) in a single game.
On December 3, 2009, Jiří was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. He scored his first goal for the Hurricanes in his very first game with them on December 11, 2009. He signed new contracts with Carolina in 2010 and 2011.
Jiří had his best season in 2011–12, scoring 18 goals and 36 points. Because of his great play, he signed a new two-year contract with the Hurricanes.
He set new career highs again in the 2012–13 season, scoring 23 goals and 38 points. He played on a line with NHL All-Stars Eric Staal and Alexander Semin, which helped him score a lot of goals.
In February 2015, Jiří was traded to the Winnipeg Jets. He played 20 games for the Jets.
On September 16, 2015, Jiří signed a one-year contract with the New Jersey Devils. During the 2015–16 season, he faced some injuries.
After that, he tried out for the Colorado Avalanche in 2016 but couldn't join due to an injury. He then signed a try-out contract with Oulun Kärpät in Finland. He played 14 games there before his injury problems continued, and he left the team in December 2016.
