Jiaxing (simplified Chinese: 嘉兴; traditional Chinese: 嘉興; pinyin: Jiāxīng; Wade–Giles: Chia-hsing), also called Kashing, is a big city in northern Zhejiang province, China. It sits on the famous Grand Canal of China. Jiaxing is bordered by Hangzhou to the southwest, Huzhou to the west, Shanghai to the northeast, and Jiangsu province to the north. In 2020, over 5.4 million people lived in Jiaxing. About 1.5 million people lived in its main urban areas.

A Look Back: The History of Jiaxing
Jiaxing has a very long history. People have lived here for thousands of years.
When was Jiaxing First Known?
- About 7,000 years ago: Jiaxing was home to the Majiabang Culture. People here were already farming, raising animals, fishing, and hunting.
- Spring and Autumn period: Jiaxing was called Zuili, meaning "Drunken Plums." It was an important city in the state of Yuè.
How Did Jiaxing Get Its Name?
- 210 BC: Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor, changed the name of the area from Changshui District to Youquan.
- 231 AD: Wild rice grew in Jiaxing. This was seen as a good sign by Sun Quan, who was the ruler of the Kingdom of Wu. He changed the name Youchuan to Hexing District. This is why Jiaxing's short name is He.
- 242 AD: Sun Quan's son, Sun He, became the crown prince. Because of a rule about not using names that sounded like the emperor's family, Hexing was changed to Jiaxing.
When Did Jiaxing Become a Prefecture?
- 938 AD: During the Five Dynasties period, Xiu Prefecture was created.
- 1117 AD: During the Song dynasty, it was called Jiahe District.
- 1429 AD: In the Ming dynasty, Xiushui District was set up near Jiaxing.
- Early 1900s: Xiushui and Jiaxing were combined into Jiahe County.
- 1914: The name changed back to Jiaxing County. This was because there was already a Jiahe in another province.
- 1921: The Chinese Communist Party was officially started on a boat in South Lake in Jiaxing.
- 1983: Jiaxing was upgraded to a prefecture-level city. This means it became a major city that oversees many smaller areas.
