History of Johnstown
The town of Johnstown started thanks to Harvey J. Parish. He bought land in 1902 when he learned a railway was being built nearby. He planned out the first part of the town, which was only about 10 acres.
Johnstown became an official town in 1907. It was named after Harvey Parish's son, John. John Parish later became the Mayor of Johnstown from 1929 to 1934.
The Johnstown Meteorite
On July 6, 1924, a meteorite fell near Johnstown. This event is known as the Johnstown meteorite. Many pieces of the meteorite were found. One large piece weighed about 23.5 kilograms (51.8 pounds). It hit the ground so hard that it made a hole 5.5 feet (1.7 meters) deep.
More than 200 people were at a funeral nearby and saw or heard the meteorite fall. Scientists say this meteorite is a special type called a "diogenite". They believe it came from an asteroid called 4 Vesta, which broke apart about a billion years ago.
Geography of Johnstown
Johnstown is located where two rivers meet: the Big Thompson River and the Little Thompson River. The city of Greeley is about ten miles east-northeast of Johnstown. Loveland is about nine miles to the northwest.
In 2010, the town covered a total area of about 13.52 square miles (35.0 square kilometers).
