Jolly Rancher is a popular American brand of candy. It includes many types of sweets like hard candies, chewy gummies, and lollipops. There was even a line of Jolly Rancher soda!
This brand started in Colorado in the 1950s. Today, The Hershey Company owns Jolly Rancher. They have owned it since 1996.
The Sweet Story of Jolly Rancher
Jolly Rancher was started by Bill and Dorothy Harmsen in 1949. They wanted the name to sound like a friendly Western company. Their first Jolly Rancher Ice Cream Store opened in Golden, Colorado. This happened on May 28, 1949.
Selling ice cream was tough in the cold winter months. So, they started selling chocolates and a popular five-cent hot cinnamon taffy stick. People loved this taffy stick! Its popularity made the Jolly Rancher Company create more hard candies.
In 1966, the Jolly Rancher Company was sold to Beatrice Foods. Bill Harmsen still helped run the business for a while. Later, in 1983, a company called Leaf, Inc. bought Jolly Rancher. Then, in 1996, The Hershey Company bought Jolly Rancher from Leaf, Inc. Hershey also bought other famous candy brands at that time.
In 2002, Hershey moved the candy making to Mexico. This helped them save money. Later, in 2014, Hershey moved the candy production again. This time, it went to a plant in Granby, Quebec, Canada.
Jolly Rancher Flavors
Jolly Rancher started with a few classic flavors. These were watermelon, apple, and fire stix. Soon, they added cherry, orange tangerine, lemon, grape, peach, and sour apple. Over time, blue raspberry became a popular flavor and replaced lemon for a while.
Today, you can find cherry, blue raspberry, grape, green apple, and watermelon. There are also sour, cinnamon, and smoothie kinds. In 2013, lemon came back in a special bag just for lemon lovers.
In 2015, they offered a "Fruity Bash" bag. It had strawberry, mountain berry, lemon, orange, and pineapple. Then, in 2017, "Hotties" came out. These were spicy flavors like watermelon & cayenne pepper. In 2020, a tropical bag arrived with fruit punch, golden pineapple, lime, and mango. There's also a "red" bag with cherry, watermelon, strawberry, and fruit punch.
Some flavors have been stopped, like the passion mix. But peach flavor came back in 2020 in its own bag!

How Jolly Ranchers are Made
Jolly Ranchers are made from a special sugar syrup. This syrup is boiled to a very high temperature. Then, it's cooled down super fast. This quick cooling stops sugar crystals from forming. That's why Jolly Ranchers look so clear and glassy!
As the syrup cools, flavors and colors are added. These are mixed into different batches. A special ingredient called malic acid is also added. This helps the candy last longer and adds more flavor.
Once the mixture starts to cool, it's pushed out into long, soft strings. These strings are then cut into candy-sized pieces. Finally, each piece is wrapped and put into packages.
