Jordan Lee Pickford, born on March 7, 1994, is a famous English football player. He plays as a goalkeeper for Everton Football Club. He also plays for the England national team.
Jordan started playing football at Sunderland when he was young. He also played for many other teams on loan. In 2017, he joined Everton, which is a big club.
Pickford has played for England at many different age levels, from under-16s to under-21s. He first played for the main England team in 2017. He was the main goalkeeper when England finished fourth in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. This was England's first semi-final since 1990. Jordan Lee Pickford was born in Washington, England. He went to St Robert of Newminster Catholic School. When he was growing up, he supported his local team, Sunderland.
Jordan started dating Megan Davison when they were in secondary school. They got married in March 2020. They have a son, who was born in 2019, and a daughter, born in September 2023.
Club Football Journey
Starting at Sunderland
Pickford joined Sunderland's youth academy when he was eight years old. He moved up through the different age groups. In 2010, he signed a scholarship deal. The next year, he joined the reserve team.
In 2011, Pickford signed his first professional contract with Sunderland. He signed another contract extension the following year.
Loan Spells to Gain Experience
To get more playing time, Pickford went on loan to several clubs.
- He played for Darlington in 2012. He played 17 games for them.
- In 2013, he joined Alfreton Town. He played 12 matches and kept 5 clean sheets.
- He also had two loan spells with Burton Albion in 2013. He played 13 games for them.
- In 2014, Pickford went to Carlisle United. He played 18 matches there.
- Later in 2014, he joined Bradford City for a whole season. He became their main goalkeeper. He played 33 league games before Sunderland called him back.
- In 2015, he moved to Preston North End on loan. He kept clean sheets in his first three games. His teammate, Chris Kirkland, praised his skills, especially his kicking.
Returning to Sunderland's First Team
On January 1, 2016, Sunderland called Pickford back to their team. He made his first team debut in an FA Cup game against Arsenal. A week later, he played his first Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur. By age 21, he had played in all top five English football leagues.
In the 2016–17 season, Pickford became Sunderland's main goalkeeper after another player got injured. He made many great saves. In April 2017, he was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.
Joining Everton Football Club
First Seasons at Everton
On June 15, 2017, Pickford signed with Everton. The transfer fee was £25 million, which could go up to £30 million. This made him one of the most expensive goalkeepers ever at that time. He played his first game for Everton on August 12, 2017.
After his first season, Pickford was named Everton's Player of the Season. He also won other club awards.
In December 2018, during a game against Liverpool, Pickford made a mistake that led to Liverpool scoring the winning goal. In March 2019, he saved a penalty against Newcastle United.
Continuing as Everton's Goalkeeper
Pickford remained Everton's first-choice goalkeeper for the 2019–20 season. He played all 38 Premier League games and kept 13 clean sheets. Even though he made some errors, his manager, Carlo Ancelotti, supported him. He also performed well in the EFL Cup, helping Everton reach the quarter-finals.
In the 2020–21 season, Pickford continued as Everton's main goalkeeper. The team started well, winning their first four games. In a game against Liverpool, Pickford was involved in a tackle that injured Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk.
Recent Success and Awards
In May 2022, Pickford won Everton's Player of the Season award again. He also won the Premier League Save of the Season award for an amazing save against Chelsea.
On September 3, 2022, Pickford kept a clean sheet in a game against Liverpool. Many people praised his performance. In February 2023, he signed a new contract with Everton until 2027.
At the end of the 2023–24 season, Pickford was named Everton Player of the Season for the third year in a row.
Playing for England
Youth National Teams

Pickford has played for England at every youth level, from under-16s to under-21s. In 2011, he played in the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup. In one game, a goal was scored against him by the opposing goalkeeper from a long kick. This is still the only goal scored by a goalkeeper from open play in a FIFA World Cup.
In 2015, he was called up to the England under-21 squad. He made his debut on September 3, 2015. He also helped his team win the 2016 Toulon Tournament in 2016.
Senior England Team
Pickford was first called up to the main England squad in October 2016. He made his debut in a friendly game against Germany in November 2017. The game ended in a 0–0 draw.
2018 FIFA World Cup
Pickford was chosen for England's squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He played in the first game against Tunisia. In the round of 16, he helped England win a penalty shootout against Colombia. This was England's first World Cup penalty shootout win.
On July 7, 2018, Pickford kept his first clean sheet of the World Cup. England beat Sweden 2–0 in the quarter-finals. This meant England reached the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1990.
2019 UEFA Nations League
In June 2019, Pickford scored a penalty and then saved one in a shootout against Switzerland. This helped England finish third in the first UEFA Nations League Finals. He was the first goalkeeper to take and score a penalty in a competitive shootout for England.
Euro 2020
Pickford was part of the England squad for UEFA Euro 2020. He became the first goalkeeper in history to keep clean sheets in the first five games of a European Championship. He also set a new England record for the longest time without conceding a goal (721 minutes). In the final, Pickford saved two penalties against Italy, but England lost the shootout.
2022 FIFA World Cup
Pickford was chosen for England's squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He played every minute of England's games and kept three clean sheets. He earned his 50th cap (game) for England in the quarter-final match against France.
Euro 2024
Pickford was named in England's squad for UEFA Euro 2024. He kept a clean sheet in the first game against Serbia. This was his tenth clean sheet for England in a major tournament, matching Peter Shilton's record. On June 25, he broke the record with his eleventh clean sheet against Slovenia.
In the quarter-final against Switzerland, Pickford saved a penalty in the shootout. England won the shootout 5–3.
