Joshua Hines-Allen (born July 13, 1997) is a talented American professional football player. He plays as a defensive end for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the National Football League (NFL). Before joining the pros, he played college football for the Kentucky Wildcats. He was so good that he won two big awards, the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, in his junior year. The Jaguars picked him as the seventh overall player in the 2019 NFL draft. He has also been chosen for the Pro Bowl twice, which is a huge honor!

Early Life and High School Football

Joshua Hines-Allen was born on July 13, 1997, in Cumberland County, Virginia. He has a twin brother, Isaiah, and four older sisters. When he was younger, he spent some time in a special education program in New Jersey. Later, he moved to Alabama and went to Abbeville High School. He was also diagnosed with ADHD.

Even though Josh grew up playing basketball, his uncle encouraged him to try out for the high school football team. In his first year, he didn't play in any games. But in his second year, he became a starting receiver. By his junior year, he was an all-state receiver, gaining 1,150 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns.

For his senior year, Josh decided to move back to New Jersey and attend Montclair High School. He changed his position from receiver to defensive end. This change made it a bit harder for colleges to notice him at first. In his only season with Montclair, he led the state in sacks and even caught a touchdown. His team finished with an impressive 11–1 record and won the 2014 state championship. After high school, Josh first planned to go to Monmouth, but then he received an offer from Kentucky.

How Josh Allen Got to College

Even though Josh led New Jersey in sacks during his senior year, not many colleges were looking at him. Other top high school players in New Jersey, who later became NFL stars, were getting more attention. A website that rates recruits, 247Sports, gave Josh a low rating. They ranked over 2,000 players ahead of him in his class.

His high school coach, John Fiore, tried to get the Rutgers team to look at him, but they weren't interested. Coach Fiore later said that Rutgers would "look foolish" when Josh was drafted in the first round. At first, no major college football team had offered Josh a scholarship.

Josh's path to Kentucky started with a phone call from a high school coach whose team had played against Montclair High. This coach called his brother, Louie Matsakis, who was a coach at Kentucky. Louie then told another Kentucky coach, D. J. Eliot, to check out Josh. Eliot asked another coach, Derrick Ansley, to visit Josh in New Jersey and see if he was at least 6'4" tall. Even though Josh had said he would go to Monmouth, he hadn't officially signed any papers yet. Josh visited Kentucky and signed with the Wildcats just three days later.

College Football Career

After his junior season at Kentucky, Josh had 7 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss. He was named to the Associated Press Second-team and the All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) team. After this great season, Josh thought about leaving college early to join the 2018 NFL draft. However, he decided to return to Kentucky for his senior year.

In his senior year, Josh was amazing. He was named a unanimous All-American. He also won the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. Plus, he was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Josh finished his college career as Kentucky's all-time leader in sacks, with 31.5 sacks.

The Jacksonville Jaguars chose Josh Hines-Allen as the seventh overall pick in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft. On May 23, 2019, he signed his first professional contract. It was a four-year deal worth $21.8 million, with a $14.6 million signing bonus.

In his third game, Josh recorded his first two career sacks against the Tennessee Titans. The Jaguars won that game 20–7. Later in the season, he sacked the opposing quarterback twice against the New York Jets, helping his team win 29–15.

Josh finished his rookie season with an impressive 10.5 sacks, which was a team record for a rookie. He also had 44 tackles and forced two fumbles. Because of his great performance, he was chosen as a Pro Bowl alternate. This made him the first Jaguars player ever to be selected to the Pro Bowl in their rookie season! He was also named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.

2020 and 2021 Seasons

In 2020, Josh recorded his first sack of the season in Week 3 against the Miami Dolphins. Unfortunately, he was later placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury in November 2020.

In 2021, Josh had a standout game in Week 9 against the Buffalo Bills. He helped the Jaguars win 9–6 in an upset victory. In that game, he had eight tackles, a sack, an interception, and recovered a fumble from the Bills' quarterback, who was also named Josh Allen! This made him the first player in NFL history to get a sack, an interception, and a fumble recovery from a quarterback with the same name.

Success in 2022 and 2023

The Jaguars showed their confidence in Josh by picking up the fifth-year option on his contract on April 28, 2022.

In the final regular-season game of 2022, Josh scored the game-winning touchdown on a fumble recovery against the Titans. This win secured the Jaguars their first division title and a spot in the playoffs since 2017. He was named AFC Defensive Player Of The Week for his amazing performance.

In Week 1 of the 2023 season, Josh started strong with three sacks against the Indianapolis Colts, helping the Jaguars win 31–21. In Week 12, he had 2.5 sacks and five tackles in a 24–21 win over the Houston Texans, earning him another AFC Defensive Player of the Week award.

Josh finished the 2023 season with a career-high and franchise record of 17.5 sacks. He was also named to the 2024 Pro Bowl.
