Early Life and High School Football
Josh Hines-Allen was born on July 13, 1997, in Cumberland County, Virginia. His parents are Kim and Robert Allen. He has a twin brother, Isaiah, and four older sisters. When he was younger, he had a stutter and also was diagnosed with ADHD.
Even though Josh grew up playing basketball, his uncle told him to try out for the high school football team. In his first year, he didn't play in any games. But by his junior year, he was a star receiver, catching passes for 1,150 yards and 11 touchdowns. For his senior year, Josh moved back to New Jersey and went to Montclair High. He changed his position from receiver to defensive end. This change didn't stop him from being amazing. He led the state in sacks and helped his team win the 2014 state championship.
How He Got to College
Even after leading New Jersey in sacks, not many colleges noticed Josh. Many top players in New Jersey that year went on to play in the NFL, but Josh was still seen as a less-known player. One recruiting website only rated him as a two-star prospect. His high school coach tried to get bigger schools to look at him, but they weren't interested.
Josh's journey to Kentucky started when a high school coach from another team called his brother, who was a coach at Kentucky. This led to Kentucky's coaches checking out Josh. Even though he had planned to go to a smaller school, Josh visited Kentucky. He liked it so much that he signed with the Wildcats just three days later.
College Career Highlights
After his junior year at Kentucky, Josh had 7 sacks and 10.5 tackles that stopped opponents from gaining yards. He was named to the All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) team. He thought about leaving college early for the NFL draft, but he decided to stay for his senior year.
In his senior year, Josh Hines-Allen became a unanimous All-American. This means all the major groups agreed he was one of the best players in the country. He also won the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which are given to the best defensive players in college football. He was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Josh finished his college career as Kentucky's all-time leader in sacks with 31.5.
