Early Life and Starting Out
Camille Angelina Purcell was born on 29 June 1988, in Streatham, London. She has Jamaican and Cuban roots. Growing up, she felt she had to be successful because her parents were. Her mother received an MBE, a special honor from the Queen, and her father was a successful businessman.
Kamille loved to sing and went to the Sylvia Young Theatre School on weekends. There, she learned singing, dancing, and acting. However, her parents wanted her to focus on her schoolwork. She followed their advice and earned a degree in economics. After college, she worked as a stockbroker in London's financial world.
But music was her true passion. A family friend introduced her to a music producer, and she started spending her evenings in a recording studio after work. One day, she decided to follow her dream. She left her office during her lunch break and never went back. A few months later, in 2012, she had her first big success. A song she co-wrote, "What About Us", was recorded by the group The Saturdays with Sean Paul. It went straight to number one in the UK.
A Hit Songwriter
Working with Little Mix
After her first hit, Kamille started writing for many famous artists, including Leona Lewis and JLS. Her most famous collaboration was with the girl group Little Mix. This partnership started in 2013 and helped make both Kamille and the group famous worldwide.
In 2015, Kamille co-wrote "Black Magic" for Little Mix. The song was a huge success, staying at number one in the UK for three weeks. The next year, she co-wrote another massive hit for them, "Shout Out to My Ex". This song also spent three weeks at number one and won a Brit Award for Best British Single in 2017.
Kamille has written 32 songs for Little Mix and is sometimes called the group's "unofficial fifth member" because they worked so closely together. She even appeared on their song "More Than Words" from the album LM5.
Hits for Other Stars
Kamille has also written huge hits for many other artists. In 2018, she had two number-one singles in a row. First was "I'll Be There" for Jess Glynne. This was immediately followed by "Solo" for Clean Bandit featuring Demi Lovato. "Solo" was streamed over a billion times on Spotify.
In 2019, she co-wrote "Don't Call Me Up" for Mabel. The song became Mabel's biggest hit, reaching number three in the UK and also getting over a billion streams. She also helped write "Cool" for Dua Lipa's award-winning album Future Nostalgia.
Awards and Own Business
Kamille's amazing work has earned her many awards. In 2019, she won the 'Music Creative Award' at the Music Week Women in Music Awards. In 2023, she received a special Ivor Novello award for her "Outstanding Song Collection," becoming the youngest Black woman to win it.
Inspired by stars like Beyoncé, Kamille launched her own record label called Pure Cut in 2019. She also opened her own recording studio, Saint Studios, in London. She wants to help other artists and share her knowledge and experience with them.
Career as a Singer
In 2017, Kamille launched her own career as a singer. She released her first EP, My Head's a Mess. The next year, she opened for singer Jessie Ware on her UK tour. She has also released many singles, including "Emotional" and "Mirror Mirror," which went viral on TikTok.
She has collaborated with many artists on their tracks, performing with Jax Jones at big events like the Jingle Bell Ball. In 2019, she joined Little Mix on stage during their tour to perform their song "More Than Words" together.
On 8 September 2023, Kamille released her first full album, K1. She has continued to release new music, including the singles "Headline" and "Freak" in 2024 from her upcoming second album.
