History of Kirkdale
Kirkdale is an area where many people used to work in factories or industries. Most of the homes here are Victorian terraced houses. These are houses built in a row, sharing side walls. From 1885 to 1983, Kirkdale had its own special area for choosing a Member of Parliament. This area was called Liverpool Kirkdale.
Kirkdale is next to other neighborhoods. To the north, it borders Bootle. To the east, you'll find Walton and Everton. To the south, it's next to Vauxhall. Boundary Street used to be an old dividing line. It separated Kirkdale from Liverpool before Liverpool grew bigger in the 1860s. This street still separates Kirkdale and Vauxhall today.
Today, Kirkdale is getting a lot of new buildings. An old housing area, the Easby estate, was taken down. In its place, new homes with two, three, and four bedrooms have been built. These new houses are for both people who already live there and those moving in.
Getting Around Kirkdale
Kirkdale has three railway stations. This is because it's a large area. Also, the Merseyrail Northern Line splits into different routes nearby.
The railway stations are:
- Bank Hall: This station is close to the border with Bootle. It's on the train line that goes to Southport.
- Kirkdale: This station serves the main housing areas of Kirkdale.
- Sandhills: This is a busy station. It acts as the main meeting point for different parts of the Northern Line.
Places to Worship
Kirkdale has several places where people can go to worship.
Churches
- St. Lawrence with St. Paul's: This is the local Church of England church. Its area, called a parish, stretches from Bootle in the north to Vauxhall in the south. It also reaches Walton in the east. St. Lawrence church joined with St. Paul's in 2002.
- St John the Evangelist's Church: This church serves the Catholic community. It is a Grade II listed building. This means it's an important historical building. The primary school linked to the church is across Sessions Road.
Kirkdale Cemetery
Kirkdale has a large cemetery. A cemetery is a place where people are buried. This one holds many graves from the First World War and the Second World War. There are 386 graves from the First World War. There are also 115 graves from the Second World War. These are called Commonwealth War Graves.
Over 100 graves from the First World War belong to Canadian soldiers. They died at a Canadian hospital set up in Kirkdale in 1917. There are two special areas for war graves. The names of those buried there are written on memorial walls.
In the past, there were many graves of German and American soldiers from the First World War. There were also Belgian soldiers from both world wars. Most of these graves were later moved. They went to special national cemeteries or back to their home countries.
Some victims of the Liverpool Blitz are also buried here. The Liverpool Blitz was when German planes bombed Liverpool during World War II. Among them were Francis William Lionel Collings Beaumont and his wife, Mary Lawson.
