The Original Lady Washington (1700s)
The first Lady Washington was a 90-ton brig. A brig is a type of sailing ship with two masts. This ship's early history is found in old documents.
Sailing the World
The Lady Washington was part of the Columbia Expedition. She left Boston Harbor on October 1, 1787. The ship sailed all the way around Cape Horn. This is the very southern tip of South America.
After that, she traded furs with Native American groups in the Pacific Northwest. She also traded tea and porcelain across the Pacific Ocean in China. The Lady Washington was the first American ship to sail around Cape Horn. She was also the first recorded ship to land on the Oregon coast.
Named for a First Lady
The ship was named to honor Martha Washington. She was the wife of George Washington. During the American Revolutionary War, Naler Hatch was her captain. After the war, Robert Gray and John Kendrick captained her. Kendrick was also the commander of the expedition.
At one point, Kendrick took command of the Lady Washington. He had her refitted in Macau, China. This means she was changed into a brigantine. A brigantine is another type of two-masted sailing ship.
Final Voyage
The Lady Washington became the first American ship to reach Japan. She tried to sell some furs there, but it wasn't successful. The ship continued to trade in the Pacific Ocean. Sadly, she sank in the Philippines in July 1797. She was lost near Vigan, in northwest Luzon.
The Modern Lady Washington (Replica)

A ship replica of the Lady Washington was built in Aberdeen, Washington, United States. It was ready for the 1989 Washington State Centennial celebrations. Aberdeen is on Grays Harbor. This harbor was named after Robert Gray, who first sailed into it.
Washington State's Tall Ship
The new Lady Washington is known as "Washington State's Tall Ship Ambassador." She is also the official State Ship. A crew of professionals and volunteers operates her. They work for the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority.
The ship sails along the Pacific coast. She often sails with another ship called the Hawaiian Chieftain. They teach students about merchant trading history. They also teach about the lives of sailors and ship officers.
The replica's main mast has a topgallant sail and a topsail above a gaff mainsail. This design is based on how the original ship looked after its refit in Macau. In some parts of the world, this is called a brigantine. In America, it's often called a brig.
Lady Washington in Movies and TV
The Lady Washington replica has been in many famous movies and TV shows.
- She played HMS Interceptor in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
- She was the brig Enterprise in Star Trek Generations.
- She helped transport Chinese immigrants in the IMAX film The Great American West.
- The ship had a big role in the miniseries Blackbeard.
- She was Captain Hook's ship, the Jolly Roger, on Once Upon a Time.
- She appeared often in the background of the TV series Revolution.
Outside of movies, the ship was featured in a music video. She was in "Burn the Ships" by the Christian music group For KING & COUNTRY. She also appeared in the music video for rapper Macklemore's song "Can't Hold Us".
