Playing Softball in College
Lauren Chamberlain was born in Orange, California. She grew up in Trabuco Canyon. She went to El Toro High School in Lake Forest. After high school, Lauren played first base for the Oklahoma Sooners at the University of Oklahoma. She played there from 2012 to 2015.
Early College Days (2012)
As a freshman in 2012, Lauren set a new record for the Big 12 Conference. She hit 30 home runs in one season! This placed her second in the entire nation for home runs that year. She was the first freshman in Big 12 softball history to win the "Big 12 Player of the Week" award three times.
In her first year, she led her team in many ways. She had the most home runs, RBIs, runs scored, and total bases. She was also second in walks and third in batting average, hits, doubles, and stolen bases. Because of her amazing performance, she was named to the All-Big 12 team and was an All-American. She also won the "Big 12 Freshman of the Year" award.
National Champion Season (2013)
In 2013, Lauren was a superstar! She led the entire nation in four different stats. These included home runs, home runs per game, slugging percentage (how powerfully she hit), and runs per game. She was also in the top ten nationally for other stats like on-base percentage and batting average.
She set eight new school records for hitting that season. These records were for batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs scored, RBIs, extra-base hits, total bases, and walks. Lauren helped her team, the Sooners, win the National Championship in 2013. After this incredible season, she was again named a first-team All-American and was on the all-conference first team.
Overcoming Injuries (2014)
The 2014 season was a bit tougher for Lauren. She only played in 39 games because of injuries. She hurt her back in March and had a partially torn ligament in her knee in May. Even with less playing time, Lauren still hit 12 home runs. She also led her team in on-base percentage and walks.
Her 51 walks that season were the sixth-best in Big 12 conference history. Even though she missed games, she was still recognized as a third-team All-American after the season. This shows how talented she was, even when hurt.
Breaking Records (2015)
Going into her senior year in 2015, Lauren needed 18 more home runs to tie the all-time college record. She led her team in six different stats, including runs, RBIs, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage. She also led the Big 12 conference in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, walks, and runs per game.
On April 30, 2015, Lauren hit a grand slam against North Texas. This home run was the 91st of her career, and it made her the all-time leader in NCAA career home runs! She finished her college career with an amazing 95 home runs. Her record stood until another great player, Jocelyn Alo, broke it in 2022. After her senior season, Lauren was nominated for the Honda Cup Award and was named the Big 12 conference's Female Athlete of the Year. She was also named to both the All-American first-team and the Big 12 first-team. Lauren retired from professional softball on May 31, 2019.
