Lake Forest is a city in Orange County, California, United States. In 2020, about 85,858 people lived there.

The city of Lake Forest was officially created on December 20, 1991. Before this, the area was known as El Toro. In 2000, Lake Forest grew to include the areas of Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills. This brought new homes and shops to the city.

Lake Forest is named after its two man-made lakes. Condos and homes are built along their shores. Local groups manage the lakes, which offer tennis courts, gyms, pools, and clubhouses.

The "forest" part of the city's name comes from a large group of Eucalyptus trees. These trees were planted in the early 1900s by Dwight Whiting. He hoped to use the trees for lumber and encourage development. Later, in the 1960s, a company built homes around these growing eucalyptus groves.

History of Lake Forest

Rancho Cañada de los Alisos
Lake Forest's history began with Rancho Cañada de los Alisos, granted in 1842.

The area was known as El Toro starting in 1863. In 1847, José Serrano and his family lived on a large piece of land called Rancho Cañada de los Alisos. This land later belonged to Dwight Whiting, who helped bring the Santa Fe train line to the area.

For many years, the area around El Toro Road and the I-5 Freeway was a main center. Over time, many shops closed or moved away. The city then worked to create a new shopping area called "Arbor at Lake Forest." This new center now competes with larger malls nearby.

In 1991, residents voted to become a city and chose the name "Lake Forest." Some people liked the new name better than "El Toro." Others, especially long-time residents, felt it erased the town's history. El Toro High School kept its original name. After the city became Lake Forest, "El Toro" often referred to the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, a military base that closed in 1999.

Geography and Location

Lake Forest covers about 17.9 square miles (46.4 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

The city is surrounded by other cities and natural areas. Irvine is to the west, and Mission Viejo is to the southeast. To the east, you'll find Trabuco Canyon and Silverado Canyon.

Lake Forest is in the middle of the Saddleback Valley. Its northeast side is near the Santa Ana Mountains. The city is also in the northern part of South Orange County.

The two man-made lakes have clubhouses. These are called the Beach and Tennis Club and the Sun and Sail Club.
