LeRoi Moore was born in Durham, North Carolina. He grew up in Virginia. He went to James Madison University to study the tenor saxophone. Later, he became a skilled jazz musician in Charlottesville, Virginia. He played with other artists like John D'earth.

Moore started playing music professionally after college. He helped start the Charlottesville Swing Orchestra in 1982. He also helped form the John D'earth Quintet. This group played at a bar in Charlottesville where Moore met Dave Matthews in 1991. Soon after, Moore began recording songs with Matthews.

Instruments LeRoi Moore Played

LeRoi Moore was very talented and played many instruments. He played several types of saxophones, including bass, baritone, tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones. He also played the flute, bass clarinet, the wooden penny whistle, and the oboe. His instrument technician, David Saull, said that Moore had "quite an extensive horn collection."

Other Music Projects

Besides playing with the Dave Matthews Band, Moore worked on other music projects. In 1995, he recorded an album with Dawn Thompson and Greg Howard. Their group was called Code Magenta. They mixed jazz music with spoken-word poetry.

Moore also appeared on the album In November Sunlight in 1996. This was the first album by the band Sokoband. He also worked as a producer for artist Samantha Farrell's second album, Luminous.

LeRoi Moore's Passing

On June 30, 2008, LeRoi Moore was in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident. This happened on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. His last live show was two days before the accident. It was at the Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, Virginia.

Jeff Coffin, a saxophonist from another band, filled in for Moore. This was the first time a band member had missed a show since 1993.

Details of the Accident

Moore was riding his ATV to check a fence on his farm. He hit a ditch that was covered in grass. The ATV flipped over and partly landed on him. He broke some ribs and hurt a lung. He was taken to the hospital for several days. Later, he had to go back to the hospital in mid-July because of problems from the accident.

After leaving the hospital again, Moore went to his home in Los Angeles. He was starting a program to help him recover. On August 19, Moore suddenly felt unwell. He was rushed to the hospital but passed away shortly after. The cause of death was determined to be pneumonia.

Tributes to LeRoi Moore

The Dave Matthews Band shared a sad message on their website. They said LeRoi Moore died unexpectedly from problems related to his ATV accident.

Dave Matthews honored Moore on the day he passed away. At a concert in Los Angeles, Matthews told the crowd, "Our good friend LeRoi Moore passed on and gave his ghost up today and we will miss him forever." Fans then cheered Moore's name.

On August 27, Moore was buried at Holly Memorial Gardens in Albemarle County. Thousands of people attended the funeral. This included the rest of the band, Moore's family, and many fans.

The Dave Matthews Band released LeRoi Moore's last concert performance as Live Trax Vol. 14. This concert was in Bristow, Virginia, on June 28, 2008. Money from the CD sales was given to local charities that Moore cared about.

Fan and Artist Tributes

On September 30, 2008, during a concert in Brazil, fans honored Moore. They released white balloons while the band played "#41." The band almost stopped playing and thanked the crowd. Violinist Boyd Tinsley was very touched by this tribute.

After Moore's passing, Methane Studios, which makes the band's show posters, created special tribute posters. One poster, sold on September 7, 2008 (which would have been Moore's 47th birthday), became a collector's item.

Another tribute poster was released on September 6, 2009. It showed the King of Spades playing a saxophone with his eyes closed. It read "GrooGrux King" on his crown. All 1100 prints sold out quickly.

Fans also threw glow sticks during concerts in 2008. A video with photos of Moore was shown during encore breaks. It played along with the song "#34".

At the 51st Grammy Awards, a video tribute to musicians who had passed away did not include Moore. This upset many fans. The president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences said Moore was listed in the event's program. He explained that they could not include everyone in the video due to time limits.
