History of Leutwil
Leutwil was first mentioned in old records in the year 1273. Back then, it was known as Lutwile. In the late 1200s and 1300s, the powerful Habsburg family controlled the "high justice" in the village. This meant they had the power to make big decisions and punish serious crimes.
Local families, like the lords of Trostburg, Reinach, and Hallwyl, handled "low justice." This involved smaller legal matters. From 1415 to 1798, Leutwil was part of the city of Bern. It was managed as part of the bailiwick of Lenzburg, which was an area controlled by a special official.
The village church was also first mentioned in 1273. In the 1200s, beautiful frescoes (wall paintings) were added inside the church. More paintings were created in the 1300s and 1400s. In 1528, the Protestant Reformation reached Leutwil. This was a big change in religion, and the church became Protestant. In 1616, the Leutwil-Dürrenäsch parish was formed, creating a shared church community.
There are two monuments in Leutwil that remind people of a terrible plague that affected the village in 1629.
In the 1700s and 1800s, most people in Leutwil earned money from farming and processing cotton. Later, from the late 1800s until 1990, the main business was making cigars. Today, Leutwil is connected by bus to nearby towns like Boniswil, Seengen, Dürrenäsch, and Teufenthal.
