Lincoln is a city in Talladega County, Alabama, United States. It became a city in 1911. In 2020, about 6,845 people lived there. The city was named after Major General Benjamin Lincoln. He was an American army leader during the Revolutionary War.

Lincoln is home to some famous places. These include the Talladega Superspeedway, a well-known race track. You can also find the International Motorsports Hall of Fame here. The Talladega Municipal Airport is also located in Lincoln.

Where is Lincoln Located?

Lincoln is in Alabama, at coordinates 33.593156 degrees North and 86.138879 degrees West. It is a key location for jobs. Honda Manufacturing of Alabama is in Lincoln. This factory employs over 4,000 people. The famous Talladega Superspeedway race track is very close to the city. It is just off exit 173 on Interstate 20.

The city covers about 21.5 square miles (55.7 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a small part, about 0.1 square miles (0.26 square kilometers), is water.

Interstate 20 runs through the southern part of Lincoln. This highway connects Lincoln to other big cities. Birmingham is about 44 miles (71 km) to the west. Atlanta is about 106 miles (171 km) to the east. You can get into Lincoln from I-20 at exits 165 and 168. U.S. Route 78 also goes through the city. Alabama State Route 77 links Lincoln to Talladega, which is 13 miles (21 km) south.

Schools in Lincoln

Lincoln has three public schools. They are part of the Talladega County Board of Education. These schools are:

  • Lincoln Elementary School
  • Charles R. Drew Middle School
  • Lincoln High School, whose sports teams are called The Golden Bears.

A famous person, Burl S. Watson, was the first to graduate from Lincoln High School in 1912. He later became a top leader for the Cities Service Company.

There is also a special school for Japanese children. It is called the Birmingham Supplementary School Inc. (BSS). This school helps Japanese children living in the area keep up with their studies in Japanese. Its main office is at the Honda factory near Lincoln. Classes are held in Hoover. The school first opened in 2001.

Major Industries

One of the biggest employers in Lincoln is Honda. Their company, Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, has a large factory here. As of 2020, this factory builds several popular Honda vehicles. These include the Honda Odyssey minivan. They also make the Honda Pilot SUV and the Honda Ridgeline pickup truck. The factory also produces the Honda J V6 engine.

Several interesting people have connections to Lincoln:

  • Pleasant Crump: He was a veteran who fought in the American Civil War. He was one of the last known people to have served for the Confederacy.
  • Burl S. Watson: He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1912. He became the President and CEO of the Cities Service Company in the 1950s and 1960s.
  • Darrell Ingram and William (Bill) Brewer: These individuals were recognized as "Lincoln Legends" in the Talladega Daily Home newspaper for their contributions in 1968-1970.
