Understanding Lingewaard's Towns
Lingewaard was created in 2001. It was formed by joining three older municipalities: Bemmel, Gendt, and Huissen. At first, the new municipality was named Bemmel. This was because Bemmel was the largest of the three.
Later, people voted in a referendum to choose a new name. They picked 'Lingewaard'. This name is not a real town. It's a made-up name that most voters liked. The municipality includes several towns and villages.
Towns/villages | Population |
---|---|
Huissen | 19,414 |

Looveer is a small area with some businesses. It is located across the Pannerden Canal. Other small villages in Lingewaard include Hulhuizen (near Gendt) and Doornik (near Bemmel). Doornik used to be a village. But in 1799, a levee breach destroyed all its houses and even the church.
Exploring Lingewaard's Nature

Lingewaard is located in an area where the rivers Waal, Nederrijn, and Linge flow. The land here is very fertile. This is because the rivers have left behind rich soil over time.
Because of this good soil, Lingewaard is perfect for growing plants. You can see many greenhouses and orchards (fruit tree farms) in the area.
In the southern part of Lingewaard, there is a special nature area called Gelderse Poort. This area is managed to help nature grow wild again. It has different types of river landscapes. These include forests along the river, open grasslands, small marshes, and deep pools called kolks. Large plant-eating animals like horses and cattle roam freely here. Their grazing helps shape the landscape.
