Changes Over Time
Sometimes, things change for these historic sites. In 2010, due to state budget cuts, some sites faced challenges.
Caretaker Status
- Los Adaes and Winter Quarters State Historic Site were put on 'caretaker status'. This means they were still protected but had fewer staff and were not fully open to visitors.
- Later that year, five more sites joined them: Centenary SHS, Fort Jesup, Fort Pike, Marksville, and Plaquemine Lock.
Reopening and Support
- Fort Jesup State Historic Site was able to reopen on November 12, 2010. This happened with help from the town of Many and local tourism groups.
- Plaquemine Lock State Historic Site also reopened on January 5, 2011, thanks to local government support.
- While the boat launch at Fort Pike reopened, the historic site itself remained under caretaker status. You could only visit by making an appointment.
Former State Historic Sites
Some places used to be state historic sites but are now managed differently.
Former State Historic Site | Parish | Date established | Date jurisdiction changed | Remarks |
---|---|---|---|---|
Kent House | Rapides Parish | 1983 | This historic home was given to a local planning group in 1983. A group called "Friends of Kent House" started helping to care for it in 1999. | |
Fort DeRussy | Avoyelles Parish | 1999 | 2016 | The city of Marksville now manages this site. |
Marksville State Historic Site | Avoyelles Parish | 1952 | 2020 | This site was given to the city of Marksville after being closed to the public since 2016. |
