List of Portuguese royal consorts facts for kids
Portugal has a fascinating history, and its queens played a big part in shaping the country! While kings usually ruled, some queens held the power themselves. These were called queens regnant. Other queens were the wives of kings, known as queens consort. Many of these queens consort were very important. They sometimes ruled the country when their children were too young to be king, or they had a lot of influence over their husbands.
Only two women officially ruled Portugal as queens: Maria I and Maria II. There were also two other powerful women, Beatriz in the 1300s and Teresa in the 1100s, who some historians consider early rulers of Portugal.
One famous queen consort was Elizabeth of Aragon, who was married to King Denis. People believed she performed miracles after her death, and she was later made a saint!
When a queen regnant ruled, her husband could only become king if they had a child together. Portugal had two "princes consort" (husbands of queens regnant) for Queen Maria II. The first, Auguste de Beauharnais, sadly died before they had children, so he never became king. Maria II's second husband, Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, became a "jure uxoris" king (meaning "by right of his wife") after their first child, Pedro V, was born. Maria I's husband, Pedro III, became king right away because they already had children when she became queen.
