List of castros in Galicia facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A castro is an old fortified village or settlement. These villages were built by people who lived in the Iberian Peninsula (where Spain and Portugal are today) thousands of years ago, especially during the Iron Age. They are often found on hills or high places, making them easy to defend.

This list shows many castros found in Galicia (Spain), a region in northwest Spain. They are grouped by province.

From the 4th century BC to the 1st century AD The Castro of Castromaior is a very important old site in this part of Spain. It has a main area at the top, with other parts connected by ditches, protective banks, and walls. This formed a settlement with five houses. People lived here from the 4th century BC to the 1st century AD. Recent digs have found three different times people lived here. The oldest homes were made of plants, and the newest was a strong house built when the Romans started to conquer the area.
