India is home to an amazing variety of animals and plants! But sadly, many of these incredible creatures are in danger of disappearing forever. To keep track of them, scientists use something called the IUCN Red List. Think of it like a special report card for nature, showing which species need our help the most.

In 2018, India's Red List was first shared at a big meeting called the Rio+20 Earth Summit. Back then, about 132 different kinds of plants and animals were on the list. But by 2023, the list had grown a lot! Now, over 950 types of animals and more than 600 types of plants are listed as critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable. This means they are all facing serious threats.

Critically Endangered Animals

Critically endangered animals are those facing an extremely high risk of becoming extinct in the wild. They are in the most serious trouble and need urgent help.

Arachnids

Only two types of arachnids (spiders and scorpions) from India are on this very serious list.

Birds

Many beautiful birds in India are critically endangered. Here are a few examples:

  • Great Indian bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) - This large bird lives in grasslands and is very rare.
  • Siberian crane (Grus leucogeranus) - A majestic white crane that visits India in winter.
  • White-rumped vulture (Gyps bengalensis) - Vultures are important for cleaning up nature, but many are disappearing.
  • Pink-headed duck (Rhodonessa caryophyllacea) - This duck has a unique pink head and might even be extinct now.

Fish

A large number of fish species in India are critically endangered, especially those found in rivers and coastal areas.

Mammals

Several mammals in India are also critically endangered, meaning their populations are very low.

  • Namdapha flying squirrel (Biswamoyopterus biswasi) - A very rare squirrel that can glide through the air.
  • Kashmir stag or hangul (Cervus canadensis hanglu) - A beautiful deer found in the Kashmir region.
  • Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) - One of the smallest rhino species, facing huge threats.
  • Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) - These unique animals are covered in scales and roll into a ball when scared.

Reptiles and Amphibians

India is rich in reptiles and amphibians, but many are in critical danger.

Endangered Animals

Endangered animals are those at a very high risk of becoming extinct in the wild. They are also in serious trouble, but perhaps not as immediately critical as the critically endangered ones.

Birds

Many more bird species are listed as endangered.

  • White-winged duck (Asarcornis scutulata) - A large duck found in wetlands.
  • Forest owlet (Athene blewitti) - A small owl that was once thought to be extinct.
  • Greater adjutant (Leptoptilos dubius) - A very large stork with a bald head.
  • Indian skimmer (Rynchops albicollis) - A bird that skims the water with its lower beak to catch fish.

Fish

Many fish species are endangered, especially those popular for food or those living in polluted waters.

Mammals

A wide range of mammals are endangered in India.

  • Red panda (Ailurus fulgens) - A cute, tree-dwelling mammal with reddish-brown fur.
  • Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) - The largest land animal in Asia.
  • Dhole (Cuon alpinus) - A wild dog found in forests.
  • Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) - The only place to find wild lions in Asia is India.
  • Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) - India's national animal, a powerful big cat.
  • Ganges river dolphin (Platanista gangetica) - A unique dolphin that lives in freshwater rivers.
  • Pygmy hog (Porcula salvania) - The smallest wild pig in the world.
  • Nilgiri tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius) - A wild goat found in the Nilgiri Hills.

Reptiles and Amphibians

Many reptiles and amphibians are also endangered.

  • Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) - A large sea turtle that eats seagrass.
  • Indian narrow-headed softshell turtle (Chitra indica) - A large freshwater turtle with a flat shell.
  • Cochin forest cane turtle (Vijayachelys silvatica) - A rare turtle found in the Western Ghats.

Vulnerable Animals

Vulnerable animals face a high risk of becoming endangered in the future if their threats continue. While not as critical as the other two categories, they still need protection.

Birds

  • Sarus crane (Antigone) - The tallest flying bird in the world.
  • Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus) - A very large pelican with a huge throat pouch.

Mammals

Many well-known Indian mammals are vulnerable.

  • Brown bear (Ursus arctos) - Found in the Himalayas.
  • Gaur (Bos gaurus) - The largest wild cattle species.
  • Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) - A large rhino with a single horn.
  • Snow leopard (Uncia uncia) - A beautiful big cat living in snowy mountains.
  • Dugong (Dugong dugon) - A gentle sea mammal, sometimes called a "sea cow."
