Understanding Hill Types
Hills aren't all the same! Experts classify them based on how much they 'stick out' from the land around them. This is called prominence. A hill with high prominence usually offers incredible views because it rises far above the surrounding land.
There are three main types of hills listed here that you'll find in Cornwall:
- Marilyns: These are big hills with a prominence of at least 150 metres (about 500 feet). They are shown in a light brown colour in the list below.
- HuMPs: This name stands for "Hundred Metre Prominence." These hills have a prominence of at least 100 metres but less than 150 metres. You'll see them in a light purple colour.
- TuMPs: These hills have a prominence of at least 30 metres but less than 100 metres.
For a hill to be included in this list, it usually needs to be at least 300 metres high with a prominence of 30 metres. Or, if it's shorter, it needs a prominence of at least 90 metres. Sometimes, a hill is included if it's special in another way.
You can learn more about these hill types by checking out the articles on Marilyns and HuMPs.
