The Prime Minister of Kuwait is the person who leads the government of Kuwait. This role is known as the head of government. The prime minister is in charge of the executive branch, which is the part of the government that manages the country's daily affairs.
In Kuwait's leadership, the Prime Minister is the third most powerful official. The most powerful is the Emir of Kuwait, who is the ruler, followed by the Speaker of the National Assembly, who leads the country's parliament.
The position of Prime Minister was created on January 17, 1962. This was shortly after Kuwait became independent and a special assembly was elected to write the Constitution. The ruler at the time, Emir Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah, appointed himself as the very first prime minister.
For many years, until 2003, it was a tradition for the Crown Prince of Kuwait (the person chosen to be the next Emir) to also serve as the prime minister.
The current Prime Minister is Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah. He took office on May 15, 2024.
