The Prime Minister of Kuwait is a very important leader in the country. They are like the head of the government, similar to a president or a chancellor in other countries. The Prime Minister works closely with the Emir of Kuwait, who is the country's ruler. They lead the executive branch, which is the part of the government that carries out laws and manages the country's daily business.
This role is the third most powerful in Kuwait, after the Emir and the Speaker of the National Assembly.
Kuwait's first Prime Minister was Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah. He was also the Emir of Kuwait when the country became independent. He took on the role of Prime Minister on January 17, 1962. This happened after a special group was chosen to write the Constitution.
For many years, until 2003, the person who was next in line to become Emir (the Crown Prince of Kuwait) was usually also made the Prime Minister.
Currently, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah is the Prime Minister of Kuwait. He started his job on May 15, 2024, after taking an oath in front of the Emir. Before him, Dr. Mohammed Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah held the position from January 17, 2024, until April 15, 2024.
