List of tallest structures in Tokyo facts for kids
Tokyo is the most populated area in Japan. It has 47 different prefectures. In Tokyo, there are 53 buildings and structures that are taller than 187 meters (614 feet).
The tallest structure in Tokyo is the Tokyo Skytree. It is a special kind of tower called a lattice tower. It stands at an amazing 634 meters (2,080 feet) tall! It was finished in 2012. The Tokyo Skytree is not only the tallest structure in Tokyo, but also the tallest in all of Japan. It's also the tallest tower in the world. Plus, it's the third-tallest freestanding structure in the world.
The tallest building in Tokyo is the Azabudai Hills Mori JP Tower. It is 325.2 meters (1,066 feet) tall. This building was finished in 2023. It's Tokyo's only "supertall skyscraper." This means it's over 300 meters (984 feet) high. The second tallest building is the Toranomon Hills Station Tower. It is 265 meters (869 feet) tall. This one was also completed in 2023. The third tallest building is the Toranomon Hills Mori Tower. It has 52 floors and is 255 meters (838 feet) tall. As of October 2023, 17 of Japan's 25 tallest buildings are in Tokyo.
Skyscrapers are quite new in Japan. For a long time, buildings could not be taller than 31 meters (102 feet). This rule changed in 1963. After that, the Kasumigaseki Building was built. It was finished in 1968. This building was 156 meters (512 feet) tall. It was twice as tall as the previous tallest building. Many people see the Kasumigaseki Building as Japan's first modern skyscraper.
Japan's economy grew a lot after World War II. Tokyo also hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics. These events helped Tokyo build many new skyscrapers in the 1960s and 1970s. Building continued through the 1980s and 1990s. Most of Tokyo's tallest buildings are in the 23 special areas of the city. Nishi-Shinjuku was the first area to have many skyscrapers. The Keio Plaza Hotel was built there in 1971. Now, Nishi-Shinjuku has 13 of Tokyo's 46 tallest skyscrapers.
Tokyo has been building many new skyscrapers recently. Since 2015, ten buildings taller than 187 meters (614 feet) have been finished. As of May 2020, eleven more buildings are being built. Many other tall buildings are planned for the future.

Tokyo's Tallest Buildings
This list shows the 50 tallest skyscrapers in Tokyo. We measure their height from the ground to the very top. This includes pointy parts and decorations. It does not include radio antennas. If buildings have the same height, they share a rank. The "Year" column shows when the building was finished. Tall towers and other structures that people don't live in are listed for comparison. However, they are not ranked in this building list.
