Exploring the History of Llagas-Uvas

The names "Uvas" and "Llagas" have interesting meanings from the Spanish language. "Uva" means "grape," and "llaga" means "wound."

The Origin of "Uvas"

This region was well known for its many wild grapes. Both Native Americans and early European settlers knew about them. The Uvas Creek was named after a land grant called Cañada de las Uvas. This means "grape ravine." The Uvas Creek flows into the Uvas Reservoir.

The Origin of "Llagas"

During the 1800s, land grants were given out by the Mexican government. Several of these grants were in the Llagas-Uvas area. One important grant was Rancho San Francisco de las Llagas. This ranch was named after "the wounds of Our Father Saint Francis." The main creek running through this ranch was named Llagas Creek.

Building the Chesbro Reservoir

In 1955, the Chesbro Reservoir was created. This happened when a dam was built on the Llagas Creek. The reservoir was made to provide enough water for local farms. It also helped supply water to the growing population in nearby Morgan Hill.
