Loma Linda is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. Its name means "Beautiful Hill" in Spanish. The city was officially formed, or incorporated, in 1970.

In 2020, about 24,791 people lived in Loma Linda. Before it became a city, the central part was called Mound City. The eastern part was known as Bryn Mawr.

History of Loma Linda

Long ago, a Native American village called Wa’aachnga was located where Loma Linda is today. The Spanish later called it Rancheria Guachama. In the early 1800s, it became a mission outpost for Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. Later, the Cahuilla and Serrano tribes lived there.

In the late 1800s, railroad companies helped start a tourist area called Mound City. They built shops and hotels, but the project did not succeed. Later, a group of doctors and business people from Los Angeles bought the Mound City Hotel. They reopened it as a place for people to rest and get healthy. They named it Loma Linda, which means 'beautiful hill'.

In 1905, Seventh-day Adventists John Burden and Ellen G. White bought the Loma Linda Hotel. They turned it into the Loma Linda Sanitarium, a type of health retreat. In 1906, they started The Loma Linda College of Evangelists, which is now Loma Linda University.

In 1969, a big flood happened when San Timoteo Creek overflowed. Two-thirds of Loma Linda was covered in water. Many bridges were washed away, and Loma Linda Academy was completely flooded. The creek flooded parts of the city again in 2010.

Loma Linda officially became a city in 1970.

Buettner's book, The Blue Zones, explains why people in Loma Linda live so long. He says it's because of the healthy habits and diet practices of the Seventh-day Adventists who live there.

The city also has rules that support a healthy lifestyle. For example, it controls the sale of alcohol and has banned public smoking. The grocery store owned by the church does not sell meat.

In 1904, the Seventh-day Adventist church bought a resort in Loma Linda. They turned it into a sanitarium and a nursing school. In 1909, they opened a medical school, which later became the Loma Linda University Medical Center. The Loma Linda Foods company, which makes healthy food products, was also started by Seventh-day Adventists in Loma Linda in 1905.

Important Seventh-day Adventist places in the city include the Loma Linda University Church and the Loma Linda Academy. Because many Adventists are vegetarians, you can find many vegetarian food options in Loma Linda restaurants. The Loma Linda Market grocery store does not sell any red meat, poultry, or seafood.

The city is known as a "Blue Zone." This means many residents live longer than average, partly because of the healthy lifestyle promoted by the Adventist faith.
