The island of Lunga is the largest of the Treshnish Isles. These islands are found in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. The Treshnish Isles are part of a special area called the Loch Na Keal National Scenic Area.

A Look Back in Time

Lunga was formed by volcanoes long ago. People used to live on Lunga until the 1800s. You can still see the remains of old stone houses, called blackhouses, on the island. The last village was left empty in 1857. Its ruins are in the northeastern part of Lunga.

Lunga is very important for nature. It is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. This means it is a protected area because of its special plants and animals. It is also a Special Protection Area and a Special Area of Conservation.

These protections help keep the island safe for its amazing wildlife. This includes grey seals that live in the waters around Lunga. It is also home to many breeding seabirds.

Birds of Lunga

Thousands of seabirds come to Lunga to nest and raise their young. These birds include storm-petrels, kittiwakes, Manx shearwaters, guillemots, puffins, European shags, and razorbills. These birds also breed on Harp Rock. This is a tall rock stack near Lunga. In winter, barnacle geese also visit the island.

The island's main attraction is its thousands of breeding puffins. These friendly birds let visitors get very close to them.

Plants of Lunga

Lunga is also home to many rare and endangered plants. Some of these special plants include primroses, birdsfoot trefoil, different kinds of orchids, sea campion, sea thrift, sea pinks, yellow flags, tormentil, and oyster plant.

Visiting Lunga

During the summer, tourist boats travel to Lunga. You can take a boat from places like Tiree, Tobermory, Iona, and Ardnamurchan.
