History of Mühlau
The very first signs of people living in Mühlau are the remains of an old Roman villa. A villa was a large country house.
The name Mühlau was first written down in 1274 as Mulnowe. For many years, important landowners in the area included the Lords of Hünenberg and the Freie of Eschenbach. Also, the Cistercian monastery at Eschenbach owned land here. A monastery is a place where monks live and work.
From 1393 to 1803, Mühlau was part of the Merenschwand district. In 1810, Mühlau officially became its own municipality. This new municipality included a small settlement called Krähenbühl. Later, in 1878, two other small settlements, Schoren and Kestenberg, joined Mühlau from Merenschwand.
Mühlau was part of the parish of Sins. A parish is an area looked after by a local church. However, the hamlets of Schoren and Kestenberg belonged to the Merenschwand parish. In 1582, the St. Anna Chapel was consecrated. This means it was officially made sacred for religious use. The current main church, St. Anna, was built between 1852 and 1853.
In 1881, a train line was built through the village, connecting Muri to Rotkreuz. The Mühlau train station opened in 1885. In 1940, a bridge was built over the Reuss river. Before this, people used a ferry to cross the river since 1393.
Today, Mühlau is still mainly a farming village. In 2005, almost a third of all jobs in the community were in farming.
