Club Career
Starting Out at Borussia Mönchengladbach
Mahmoud Dahoud began playing football at a young age for local clubs like Germania Reusrath and Fortuna Düsseldorf. When he was 14, in 2010, he joined Gladbach. He spent five years learning and growing in Gladbach's youth academy before joining the main team in 2014.
First Steps in 2014–15
On 27 August 2014, Dahoud played his first game for the senior team. It was a Europa League match against FK Sarajevo, which Gladbach won 7–0. He came into the game as a substitute. Just a week before this, Dahoud signed his first professional contract, agreeing to stay with the club until June 2018.
He played only two more senior games that season. One was in the Europa League and the other was his Bundesliga debut against Borussia Dortmund. When he played his first Bundesliga game, Dahoud became the first player born in Syria to play in that league.
Breakthrough Season in 2015–16
After the coach, Lucien Favre, left early in the 2015–16 Bundesliga season, Dahoud started playing more often. He became a key player in the midfield under the new coach, André Schubert. He scored his first goal for the club on 23 September 2015 in Schubert's first game, helping Gladbach win 4–2 against Augsburg.
Dahoud also made his Champions League debut that season. Fans noticed his great performances and voted him as the Fans' Player of the Month for September. He continued to play well, scoring and assisting goals, and even received a standing ovation from opposing fans. By the end of the season, Dahoud had played 32 league games, scoring 5 goals and assisting 9. Gladbach finished fourth in the Bundesliga, which meant they qualified for the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League qualifiers.
Final Season at Gladbach in 2016–17
In August 2016, Dahoud's agent said that he had turned down a new contract with Gladbach. This was because he wanted to leave the club at the end of the season. There were rumors that big clubs like Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain were interested in him.
He scored his first goal of the season on 26 November in a 1–1 draw against Hoffenheim. On 16 March 2017, he scored his first goal in a European competition during a Europa League game against Schalke.
With only one year left on his contract, Gladbach announced on 30 March that Dahoud would join another Bundesliga team, Borussia Dortmund, at the end of the season. He played 41 matches that season.
Time at Borussia Dortmund
Joining Dortmund in 2017–18
Dahoud officially joined Borussia Dortmund on 1 July 2017. The club's sporting director, Michael Zorc, said that Dahoud was a very talented midfielder they had been watching for years. Dahoud played his first game for Dortmund on 6 August in a match against Bayern Munich. On 12 August 2017, he helped set up a goal for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a cup win.
Playing in 2018–19
On 26 August 2018, Dahoud scored his first Bundesliga goal for Dortmund in a 4–1 win over RB Leipzig. However, he did not play as much as he might have wanted because new players like Thomas Delaney and Axel Witsel were often chosen to play in midfield.
Challenges in 2019–20
Dahoud had a tough season in 2019–20. He faced injuries and it was hard for him to play consistently. He appeared in 14 matches across all competitions.
Success in 2020–21
On 17 February 2021, he scored his first Champions League goal. This happened in a 3–2 away win against Sevilla in the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League round of 16.
On 13 May 2021, Dahoud started in the 2021 DFB-Pokal final against RB Leipzig. He helped his team win this trophy by assisting a goal for Jadon Sancho early in the game. This was his second trophy with Borussia Dortmund.
Consistent Play in 2021–22
During the 2021–22 Bundesliga season, Dahoud played in 22 games. He was one of the top central midfielders in the league for how many passes he completed and how often he touched the ball.
Leaving Dortmund in 2022–23
On 29 May 2023, Borussia Dortmund announced that Dahoud was one of five players leaving the club.
Move to Brighton & Hove Albion
On 16 June 2023, it was announced that Dahoud would join Premier League team Brighton & Hove Albion. He joined them for free on 1 July and signed a four-year contract. He played his first game for Brighton on 12 August, starting in a 4–1 home win against Luton Town.
Loan to VfB Stuttgart
On 1 February 2024, Dahoud returned to Germany to play for VfB Stuttgart on loan for the rest of the season. On 17 February, he scored his first goal for Stuttgart in a 2–1 away victory over Darmstadt.
Joining Eintracht Frankfurt
On 30 August 2024, Dahoud left Brighton & Hove Albion and joined Eintracht Frankfurt permanently. He signed a two-year contract with the club.
International Career
Playing for Germany
Mahmoud Dahoud had already played for Germany's U18 and U19 teams. He made his debut for the Germany U21 team on 24 March 2016, coming on as a substitute in a 4–1 win against the Faroe Islands. A week later, he started his first full game for the U21 team against Russia.
The next year, he was chosen for Germany's squad for the 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Poland. Germany won the championship, beating Spain 1–0 in the final. Dahoud could also play for Syria, but he said he wanted to play for Germany.
Dahoud made his debut for the senior German national team on 7 October 2020 in a friendly match against Turkey.
Brief Call-up for Syria
In March 2024, Dahoud was called up to the Syria national football team for 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification games. However, he left the Syrian team camp before a match against Myanmar. Reports said he was not happy with the conditions or promises from the Syrian FA.
Choosing Germany and Later Syria
After not playing for the Syrian national team, Dahoud said in September 2024 that he wanted to play for Germany again. He said he grew up in Germany and would love to play for his home country.
However, on 31 March 2025, the Syrian FA announced that Dahoud had agreed to return to the Syrian national team. This was planned to start with their match in June 2025 against Afghanistan. But he was not included in Syria's squad for that June match.
Personal Life
Dahoud was born in Amuda, a town in northeast Syria. His family is of Kurdish descent. His parents brought him to Germany in 1996 to escape the government at the time. He has said that his football hero is the French legend Zinedine Zidane. He has spoken both German and Arabic since he was a child.
After the government in Syria changed in December 2024, Dahoud posted on social media. He said he was a "son and brother of the Syrian people and Syria" and congratulated his country for achieving "a victorious and free Syria for all."
