Exploring the Musical Segments
This movie is special because it is made up of ten different short stories, or segments. Each segment has its own unique style and music.
The Martins and the Coys
This part features the popular radio singing group, King's Men. They sing a story about a family feud, similar to the famous Hatfields and McCoys. The fighting stops when two young people from each family fall in love. This segment was later removed from the film's video release.
Blue Bayou
Blue Bayou uses animation that was first planned for the movie Fantasia. It is set to the beautiful music of Debussy called Clair de Lune.
All the Cats Join In
This is one of two segments that features music by Benny Goodman. It shows a cool animation style where a pencil draws the action as it happens. The story is about teens in the 1940s who love to dance to popular music.
Without You
Without You is a sad song about lost love. It is sung by Andy Russell.
Casey at the Bat
In this segment, Jerry Colonna tells the famous poem about Casey, a very confident baseball player. His overconfidence leads to his downfall.
Two Silhouettes
This part features two real-life ballet dancers, David Lichine and Tania Riabouchinskaya. They dance in silhouette against animated backgrounds and characters. Dinah Shore sings the main song.
Peter and the Wolf
Sterling Holloway narrates this story based on Prokofiev's music. It is about a little boy named Peter who hunts for a wolf. Each character in the story is represented by a different instrument in an orchestra, like violins for Peter or a flute for a bird.
After You've Gone
This segment again features Benny Goodman and his orchestra. It shows four musical instruments that act like people, parading through a fun musical playground.
Johnnie Fedora and Alice Blue Bonnett
This is a sweet romantic story about two hats. Johnnie Fedora and Alice Blue Bonnett fall in love while sitting in a department store window. When Alice is sold, Johnny tries to find her. The Andrews Sisters sing the songs for this segment.
The Whale Who Wanted To Sing At the Met
This story is about Willie, a sperm whale with an amazing singing voice. Willie dreams of singing Grand Opera. However, a theater producer named Tetti-Tatti thinks Willie has swallowed an opera singer. Tetti-Tatti chases Willie with a harpoon. Nelson Eddy performs all the voices in this segment.
How the Movie Was Made
Make Mine Music was created during World War II. Many of Walt Disney's artists and staff joined the United States Army. Those who remained at the studio were asked by the U.S. government to make training and propaganda films. Because of this, the studio had many unfinished story ideas. To keep the movie studio going during this hard time, Disney released four "package films." These movies, including Make Mine Music, were made up of several short, unrelated segments set to music.
