Early life
Mamady Doumbouya was born on March 4, 1980, in the Kankan Region of Guinea. His family comes from the Mandinka ethnic group.
Military career
Before returning to Guinea, Doumbouya was a French legionnaire, which means he served in the French military. He held the rank of corporal. When he came back to Guinea, he became the leader of the Special Forces Group. This is a special, highly trained military unit that was created by former President Alpha Condé.
When Doumbouya took on this leadership role, he was promoted to the rank of battalion commander. People noted his wide experience from training in many different countries. In 2018, he met Assimi Goïta, who is from Mali, during a US Army training session in Burkina Faso. Both Doumbouya and Goïta later led military takeovers in their own countries. Doumbouya continued to rise through the ranks, becoming a lieutenant colonel in 2019 and a colonel in 2020. In 2024, during his time as president, he was promoted to general.
During his 15 years in the military, Doumbouya was sent on missions to several countries. These included Afghanistan, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, the Central African Republic, Israel, Cyprus, the UK, and Guinea.
The 2021 Coup d'état
Mamady Doumbouya was the leader of the military takeover that happened on September 5, 2021. During this event, the president of Guinea, Alpha Condé, was taken into custody. A coup d'état is when a small group, usually military, takes control of the government by force.
After the takeover, Doumbouya announced on state television that his group had ended the government and the country's laws. He said that the "National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD)" had to act because of problems in the country. He mentioned issues like the misuse of the justice system, not following democratic rules, and problems with poverty and corruption. To explain why the military acted, Doumbouya quoted former Ghanaian president Jerry Rawlings. Rawlings had said that "if the people are crushed by their elites, it is up to the army to give the people their freedom."
Interim President of Guinea
After the military takeover, Mamady Doumbouya became the interim president. On October 1, 2021, he was officially sworn in at the Mohammed V Palace
in Conakry. As interim president, Doumbouya announced plans to "rebuild the state." He promised to hold "free, fair, and open" elections. He also said that Guinea would continue to honor all its agreements with other countries and international groups.
Doumbouya has met with other leaders in the region. On Mali's 62nd independence anniversary, he met with Malian president Assimi Goïta. They talked about various important topics during his visit. He also met with Paul Kagame, the president of Rwanda, in Guinea. Doumbouya was inspired by Kagame's efforts to reform and bring peace to Rwanda.
On February 19, 2024, Doumbouya and the National Committee of Reconciliation and Development announced that the temporary government would be dissolved. This was done to prepare for new presidential elections that will be held later.
