Mamady Doumbouya's Military Career
Doumbouya was a French legionnaire and held the rank of corporal. He later returned to Guinea to lead the Special Forces Group. This is an elite military unit that was created by former President Alpha Condé. When Doumbouya took on this role, he was promoted to battalion commander. His experience from training in many different countries around the world was noted.
In 2018, he met Assimi Goïta from Mali in Burkina Faso. They were at a training session for special forces commanders from the region, organized by the US Army. Both Doumbouya and Assimi Goïta later led military changes in their own countries. Doumbouya worked for Guinea's intelligence services, based in Forécariah. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 2019 and then to colonel in 2020. In 2021, he was looking for more power for the Special Forces Group. During his time as president, he was promoted to general in 2024. At the same time, he stepped down from leading the Special Forces Group.

The 2021 Change in Government
Mamady Doumbouya was the leader of the change in government on 5 September 2021 in Guinea. During this event, the president of Guinea, Alpha Condé, was taken into custody. Doumbouya announced on state television that his group had taken control of the government. He stated that the "National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) felt forced to act." He explained this was due to "the difficult political situation in our country, the misuse of the justice system, not following democratic rules, too much politics in public administration, and also poverty and corruption." To explain why the military acted, Doumbouya quoted former Ghanaian president Jerry Rawlings. Rawlings had said that "if the people are crushed by their leaders, it is up to the army to give the people their freedom."
Serving as Interim President of Guinea
After taking power, Doumbouya told government ministers not to go against him. He said that if they did, he would see it as an act of going against the new leadership. He also announced that former president Alpha Condé would not be released. However, he confirmed that Condé would still receive healthcare. Doumbouya did not seem worried about possible economic penalties from ECOWAS. He said through a spokesperson that "as soldiers, their work is in Guinea and there is nothing to freeze in their accounts." Representatives from ECOWAS also asked the military leaders to let former president Condé leave Guinea. However, the leaders refused this request.
On 1 October 2021, Doumbouya was officially sworn in as interim president. The ceremony took place at Mohammed V Palace
in Conakry. He shared his plans to "rebuild the state." He also promised to hold "free, fair, and clear" elections. He also said he would respect "all the national and international agreements the country has agreed to."On Mali's 62nd anniversary of independence, Doumbouya met with Malian president Assimi Goïta. Goïta welcomed him warmly. They talked about many important issues during Doumbouya's visit.
Doumbouya also met with Paul Kagame of Rwanda in Guinea. He was the first leader to meet Kagame since the 2021 change in government. Doumbouya was inspired by Kagame to make reforms and bring his nation together, similar to what Kagame did in Rwanda.
On 19 February 2024, Doumbouya and the National Committee of Reconciliation and Development decided to end the interim government. This was done to prepare for new presidential elections that will be held later.
