General Mamady Doumbouya (born 5 December 1984) is a military leader who became the president of Guinea on 5 September 2021. He is currently serving as the interim president. Doumbouya took charge of the country on 5 September 2021, leading a group that changed the government.
He is a member of the Special Forces Group within the Guinean military. Before this, he was a soldier in the French Foreign Legion. After taking control, Doumbouya announced on state television that his group had dissolved the previous government and its rules. On 1 October 2021, he was officially sworn in as the interim president. He became the head of the military group that took power.

Early Life and Education
Mamady Doumbouya was born on 5 December 1984 in the Kankan Region of Guinea. His family comes from the Mandinka group. He attended primary school at the Dramé Oumar school.
Military Career and Leadership
Doumbouya began his military career as a French legionnaire and reached the rank of corporal. He completed his service with the French Foreign Legion in 2009.
In 2011, he returned to Guinea. There, he worked at the Centre d'instruction d'infanterie of Camp Kwamé Krumah. He first served as an instructor and later became the Director of studies. He also received special training for unit commanders in Senegal.
In 2018, Doumbouya was chosen to lead the Special Forces Group. This is an elite military unit that was created by the former president, Alpha Condé. When he took on this role, he was promoted to battalion commander. His international experience and training in various countries were noted. In 2018, he met Assimi Goïta from Mali during a US Army training session in Burkina Faso. Both leaders later took control of their governments through military actions. Doumbouya worked with Guinea's intelligence services, based in Forécariah. He was promoted again to lieutenant colonel in 2019 and to colonel in 2020. In 2021, he was promoted to general and stepped down from leading the Special Forces Group.
During his 15-year career, Doumbouya served in many different places. These included Afghanistan, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, the Central African Republic, Israel, Cyprus, the UK, and Guinea.
Taking Charge of Guinea
Mamady Doumbouya led the actions on 5 September 2021, which resulted in the former president of Guinea, Alpha Condé, being taken into custody. Doumbouya announced on state television that his group had dissolved the government and its constitution. He explained that the "National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD)" felt it had to act. He stated that the country faced challenges like political difficulties, unfair legal practices, a highly politicized public administration, poverty, and corruption.
Leading Guinea as Interim President
After taking power, Doumbouya held meetings with government officials to discuss the country's future. He also announced that former president Alpha Condé would remain under their care for health reasons.
On 1 October 2021, Doumbouya was officially sworn in as the interim president at the Mohammed V Palace in Conakry. He shared his plans to "refound the state." This included introducing "free, credible and transparent" elections. He also promised to respect all national and international agreements that Guinea had made.
Working with Other Nations
On Mali's 62nd independence anniversary, Doumbouya met with Malian president Assimi Goïta. They discussed various important issues during his visit. Doumbouya also met with Paul Kagame, the president of Rwanda, in Guinea. This was his first meeting with a foreign head of state since he took power. Doumbouya was inspired by Kagame's efforts to reform and bring reconciliation to his nation.
Steps Towards New Elections
On 19 February 2024, Doumbouya and the National Committee of Reconciliation and Development ordered the interim government to be dissolved. This was done to prepare for new presidential elections that were to be held later.
The 2025 Guinean constitutional referendum was held on 21 September 2025. About 89% of voters approved a proposed new constitution. On 3 November 2025, Doumbouya submitted his candidacy for the 2025 Guinean presidential election, which is scheduled for 28 December 2025.
Economic Focus
Under Mamady Doumbouya's leadership, Guinea has welcomed investments and funding from China. These investments are mainly focused on the country's mining sector.

Mamady Doumbouya is married to Lauriane Darboux. She is an active member of the French National Gendarmerie. They have four children together.
