Manalapan Brook is a stream in New Jersey. It flows through parts of Monmouth and Middlesex counties. This brook is a tributary of the South River. A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger one. Eventually, its waters reach the Atlantic Ocean.

The Journey of Manalapan Brook
Manalapan Brook starts in western Monmouth County. This is a few miles south of Monmouth Battlefield State Park. The brook flows generally north. It travels through many towns in Middlesex and Monmouth Counties.
Where Does the Water Go?
The area that collects water for Manalapan Brook is called its drainage basin or watershed. This watershed covers about 43 square miles (111 square kilometers). It includes several towns. These towns are Millstone Township, Freehold Township, and Manalapan Township. It also includes Englishtown, Monroe Township, and Jamesburg. Other towns are Helmetta, Spotswood, South Brunswick Township, and East Brunswick Township.
Lakes Along the Brook
Along its path, Manalapan Brook helps create several man-made lakes. These lakes are formed by dams. Some of these lakes include Bulk's Lake, near the Charleston Springs Golf Course. There is also Millhurst Pond in Manalapan. Other lakes are Lake Manalapan in Jamesburg, Helmetta Pond in Helmetta, and Devoe Lake in Spotswood.
After flowing through Lake Manalapan, the brook continues north. It then flows into Devoe Lake in Spotswood. In Spotswood, Manalapan Brook joins with Matchaponix Brook. Together, they form the South River. The South River then flows under Route 18. Finally, it empties into the Raritan River in Old Bridge Township.
What Does "Manalapan" Mean?
The name Manalapan comes from the Lenape language. The Lenape people were Native Americans who lived in this area. The name means "good cultivation" or "good country." The brook also shares its name with Manalapan Township. This is one of the towns it flows through.
