Millstone Township is a community located in western Monmouth County, New Jersey. It's part of the larger New York metropolitan area. In 2020, about 10,376 people lived here.
The township gets its name from the Millstone River. This river is a major branch of the Raritan River. The story goes that a millstone (a large stone used in mills to grind grain) was once dropped into the river, giving it its unique name. The river actually starts right here in Millstone Township!
Millstone Township is known as one of New Jersey's wealthiest communities. In recent years, the average household income was more than double the state average. This makes it one of the top high-income areas in New Jersey.

History of Millstone Township

Millstone Township was officially created on February 28, 1844. It was formed from parts of nearby Freehold Township, Upper Freehold Township, and Monroe Township. A small part of the township later became the borough of Jersey Homesteads in 1937, which is now known as Roosevelt.
The community has a long history of being a high-income area. This means many families living here have higher earnings compared to other parts of the state.
Geography and Natural Features
Millstone Township covers about 37.18 square miles (96.30 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small portion being water.
There are two main communities with their own post offices in the township. These are Clarksburg (ZIP Code 08510) and Perrineville (ZIP Code 08535). Other small places within the township include Bairdsville and Holmeson.
Millstone Township shares its borders with several other towns. These include Freehold Township, Manalapan Township, and Roosevelt in Monmouth County. It also borders towns in Mercer, Middlesex, and Ocean counties.
Rivers and Lakes in Millstone

Millstone Township is special because many important rivers and streams in New Jersey start here. The township sits on a ridge, which is like a raised area of land. This location helps feed water into different river systems.
Most of the township's water flows into the Raritan River. The Millstone River, which gives the township its name, is a major branch of the Raritan River. Some parts of the township also send water to the Delaware River.
The Assunpink Creek and Doctors Creek flow through the southern and western parts of the township. You can find the Assunpink Wildlife Preservation Area here. This area has wetlands and lakes, which are great for watching migratory birds. It also has trails for biking, horseback riding, and hiking.
Another nature spot nearby is Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township. It offers wetlands, hiking trails, and even campgrounds. Millstone Township is also unique because some of its water flows into the Toms River. This river eventually reaches the Barnegat Bay.

Local Plant Life
The natural plant life in Millstone Township is mostly made up of Oak trees. It's part of what's called an Eastern Hardwood Forest. This means you'll find many different kinds of trees with broad leaves that often change color in the fall.
Population and People
The population of Millstone Township has grown quite a bit over the years. In 1850, there were about 1,676 people. By 2020, the population had grown to 10,376.
In 2010, the township had 10,566 people. Most residents were White (about 89.4%). There were also people who identified as Black or African American (3.6%), Asian (4.5%), and other races. About 5.5% of the population was of Hispanic or Latino background.
Many families live in Millstone Township. In 2010, about 45.8% of households had children under 18. Most households (78.5%) were married couples living together. The average household had about 3.2 people.
Education in Millstone Township
The Millstone Township Schools serve students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The school district has three schools:
- Millstone Township Primary School (Pre-K to 2nd grade)
- Millstone Township Elementary School (3rd to 5th grade)
- Millstone Township Middle School (6th to 8th grade)
After eighth grade, students attend Allentown High School in Allentown. This high school also serves students from Allentown and Upper Freehold Township.

Millstone Township does not have its own local police department. Instead, the township is patrolled by the New Jersey State Police.
The Millstone Township Fire Department provides both fire protection and ambulance services. They have firefighters on duty 24/7 to respond to emergencies.
Transportation
Millstone Township has many roads that help people get around. In 2010, there were over 150 miles of roadways. Most of these are maintained by the township itself.
Interstate 195 is the main highway that goes through the southern part of Millstone Township. It connects the township to nearby places like Upper Freehold and Jackson.
Several county roads also pass through Millstone Township. These include CR 524, CR 526, CR 527, CR 537, and CR 571. A small part of Route 33 also goes through the northern tip of the township.
The New Jersey Turnpike (also known as Interstate 95) is easily reached from Millstone Township. You can find entrances in nearby Robbinsville, East Windsor, and Monroe townships.
Healthcare Access
Millstone Township residents can get healthcare from CentraState Healthcare System. This system includes a hospital in nearby Freehold Township. It also has family doctor offices in other nearby communities like East Windsor and Monroe Township.
Other hospitals close to Millstone Township include Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton Township and Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center in Plainsboro Township.
