East Windsor is a township in Mercer County, New Jersey. It's located between the Delaware Valley and Raritan Valley regions. This makes it a suburb of New York City. It also borders the Philadelphia area.
East Windsor is a busy place for homes, businesses, and factories. It's in the middle of Central New Jersey. Many major highways pass through here. These roads connect to New York City, Philadelphia, and nearby towns. Some of these towns include Freehold, Princeton, and Trenton.
In 2020, about 30,045 people lived in East Windsor. This was the highest number ever counted. The population grew by over 2,800 people since 2010.
East Windsor and West Windsor were created on February 9, 1797. They were formed when Windsor Township was divided. The area was then part of Middlesex County. East Windsor became an official township on February 21, 1798. It was one of the first 104 townships in New Jersey. Parts of the township were later used to form Hightstown borough and Robbinsville Township. The township was named after Windsor Township, which was named after Windsor, England.

Geography of East Windsor
East Windsor Township covers about 15.66 square miles (40.55 km2). Most of this area is land. Only a small part, about 0.09 square miles (0.23 km2), is water.
Twin Rivers is a community inside East Windsor. About 7,443 people lived there in 2010. It was New Jersey's first "planned unit development." This means it was designed with homes and services all together. Other small communities in East Windsor include Etra and Hickory Corner.
East Windsor shares borders with several other townships. These include Robbinsville and West Windsor. It also borders Cranbury, Monroe, and Plainsboro. In addition, it borders Millstone and Upper Freehold.
East Windsor completely surrounds the town of Hightstown. This is like a "doughnut town" where one town is completely inside another. The Meadow Lakes retirement community is also partly in East Windsor and partly in Hightstown.

The 2010 census counted 27,190 people living in East Windsor. There were 10,224 households. About 7,167 of these were families. The average household had 2.65 people. The average family had 3.18 people.
About 24.2% of the people were under 18 years old. About 11.6% were 65 years or older. The average age was 38.2 years.
Economy and Shopping
East Windsor is home to several pharmaceutical companies. These include Hovione, CoreTech, and Aurobindo. Many businesses are located along U.S. Route 130.
Nearby Hightstown has a downtown area. You can find restaurants, shops, and art galleries there. Downtown Hightstown, Inc. works to promote local businesses. They want to show that Hightstown offers many services. It also provides great personal service.
Larger shopping malls are a short drive away. These include Freehold Raceway Mall and Quaker Bridge Mall.
Education in East Windsor
Students in East Windsor go to public schools from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade. They attend the East Windsor Regional School District. This district also serves students from Hightstown. In the 2022–23 school year, there were 5,138 students. There were also 450 teachers. This means about 11 students per teacher.
Students from Roosevelt Borough also attend schools in this district. They join for grades seven through twelve. The school board has nine members. Seven of these members are from East Windsor.

Students in eighth grade from Mercer County can also apply to special high school programs. These are offered by the Mercer County Technical Schools. They offer programs in Health Sciences, STEM, and Culinary Arts. Students do not have to pay tuition to attend.
Transportation in East Windsor

East Windsor has many roads. As of 2010, there were about 93.45 miles of roads. The township maintains most of them. Mercer County and the state also maintain some roads.
Several major highways pass through East Windsor. The most important is the New Jersey Turnpike (Interstate 95). Exit 8 of the Turnpike is in East Windsor. This exit connects to Route 33 and Route 133. Route 33 goes east to west. Route 133 helps drivers bypass Hightstown. U.S. Route 130 also crosses the western part of East Windsor.
For public transportation, Suburban Transit offers bus service. You can take a bus to Midtown Manhattan or Wall Street in Downtown Manhattan.
The closest train station is Princeton Junction. You can take a shuttle bus to this station during busy hours. Mercer County also has a shuttle service. It connects to businesses and transportation hubs along Route 130.
Healthcare Services
East Windsor has healthcare services from CentraState Healthcare System. This is a hospital in nearby Freehold Township. It is connected to Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. CentraState also has family doctor offices in central New Jersey. One of these offices is in East Windsor on U.S. Route 130.
Other nearby hospitals include Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton Township. There is also Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center in Plainsboro Township.

Ecology and Nature
Most of East Windsor Township would naturally have Oak trees. These would be part of an Eastern Hardwood Forest. Some areas, especially near Hightstown, would have a mix of Oak and Pine trees.
