Marco Amelia (born 2 April 1982) is a former Italian goalkeeper and a current coach. He is known for his time playing for Italian clubs like Livorno and Milan. He also played for the English club Chelsea.
Amelia won a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics. He played nine games for the Italian national team. He was part of the team that won the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He also joined Italy's squads for UEFA Euro 2008 and the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Playing Career Highlights
Starting Out in Italy
Marco Amelia was born in Frascati, Italy. He started playing football in the youth system of Roma. Interestingly, he first played as a forward before becoming a goalkeeper.
In 2001, he joined Livorno. He played only one game in his first season. Livorno then bought him permanently in 2002. He became a regular player for the team.
Loans and Return to Livorno
Amelia spent short loan periods at Lecce and Parma. He then returned to Livorno in 2004. He became a very important player for the team.
In the 2006–07 UEFA Cup, Amelia even scored a goal! He headed the ball into the net in the last moments of a game against Partizan. This made the score 1–1.
Time with Palermo and Genoa
In July 2008, Amelia joined Palermo. One memorable moment was when he saved a penalty from Ronaldinho. This helped Palermo win 3–1 against Milan.
In August 2009, he moved to Genoa. He was the main goalkeeper for Genoa during his time there.
Playing for AC Milan
In June 2010, Amelia joined Milan on loan. Milan then bought him permanently in May 2011. He was usually the second-choice goalkeeper behind Christian Abbiati.
Amelia played 14 games for Milan in the 2011–12 season. He made 11 appearances in the 2012–13 season. Milan did not renew his contract in 2014.
Later Clubs, Including Chelsea
After leaving Milan, Amelia played for an amateur team called Rocca Priora. In February 2015, he returned to professional football with Perugia.
Later in 2015, he became the honorary president and a player for Lupa Castelli Romani. In October 2015, he moved to England. He signed with Premier League club Chelsea. He was a back-up goalkeeper there. He left Chelsea in June 2016. In February 2017, he signed with Vicenza.
International Football
Youth and Olympic Success
Marco Amelia first played for the Italy under-15 team in 1998. He was the main goalkeeper for the Italy under-21 team that won the 2004 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
Later in 2004, he won a bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. He was a back-up goalkeeper for the Italy under-23 team.
Playing for the Senior Italian Team
Amelia played his first game for the senior Italian team in November 2005. He was 23 years old. He came on as a substitute in a friendly game against the Ivory Coast.
He was chosen as Italy's third goalkeeper for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Italy won the tournament, making Amelia a World Cup winner! He did not play in any matches during the competition.
After the World Cup, Amelia became Italy's second-choice goalkeeper. He was part of the squad for UEFA Euro 2008 and the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. His last game for Italy was in June 2009. In total, he played nine games for Italy.
Coaching Career
After finishing his playing career, Marco Amelia became a football coach. He received his coaching license in 2017.
In July 2018, he became the head coach of Serie D club Lupa Roma. He then moved to Vastese in June 2019 but was let go in January 2020.
In March 2021, he returned to Livorno as their head coach. However, he could not save the team from being relegated. In September 2021, he coached Prato for two months.
In August 2024, Amelia was hired by Olbia. He was dismissed in September 2024 after a difficult start to the season. In December 2024, he was appointed as the new head coach of Nuova Sondrio.
Personal Life
Marco Amelia is married to Carlotta Bosello. They have two children together. Their son, Giulio Cesare Amelia, was born in 2009. Their daughter, Matilde Amelia, was born in 2013.
