Marco's Club Career Highlights
Starting Out in Football
Marco Amelia was born in Frascati, Italy. He grew up playing in the youth teams of Roma. Interestingly, he first played as a forward before becoming a goalkeeper!
In 2001, he joined Livorno, a club in Serie C1. He played only one game in his first season there. Livorno then bought him fully in 2002. He became a regular player for them when they moved up to Serie B.
Loan Spells and Return to Livorno
Marco then had two short loan periods at Lecce and Parma. Both of these teams were in Serie A, Italy's top league.
He returned to Livorno in June 2004 and became a very important player for them. He even got to play in a European competition, the 2006–07 UEFA Cup. In November 2006, he did something amazing: he scored a goal! It was a header in the last moments of a game against Partizan, making the score 1–1.
Time with Palermo and Genoa
In July 2008, Livorno was moved down to Serie B. Marco then joined Palermo. One memorable moment was when he saved a penalty kick from the famous player Ronaldinho in a game against Milan.
In August 2009, Marco moved to Genoa as part of a player exchange. He was the main goalkeeper for Genoa during his time there.
Playing for AC Milan
On 23 June 2010, Marco Amelia joined Milan on a loan deal. Milan later bought him permanently in May 2011. Even though he was usually the second-choice goalkeeper behind Christian Abbiati, he still played some important games.
In the 2011–12 season, he played 14 games for Milan. He continued to be the second-choice goalkeeper in the 2012–13 season. Milan did not renew his contract after the 2013–14 season.
Later Career and Chelsea Move
Marco became a free agent on 1 July 2014. He played for an amateur team called Rocca Priora for a few months. Then, in February 2015, he returned to professional football with Serie B club Perugia.
Later in 2015, he became the honorary president and a player for Lupa Castelli Romani. On 8 October 2015, he moved to England for the first time. He signed with Premier League club Chelsea as a backup goalkeeper. He left Chelsea in June 2016.
