Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Fuller Olsen (born June 13, 1986) are American fashion designers and former actresses. They are often called the Olsen twins.
Mary-Kate and Ashley started acting when they were babies. They played the same character, Michelle Tanner, on the TV show Full House from 1987 to 1995. As they got older, they starred in many other TV shows and movies through their own company, Dualstar. The twins became very popular with kids and teens, and they were some of the richest young women in entertainment.
In the mid-2000s, the Olsens stopped acting and started working in fashion design. In 2006, they created their own fancy fashion brand called The Row, based in New York City. They have won several important awards for their fashion work from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).

Early Life and Acting Career
Growing Up and Becoming Stars
The twins were born in Sherman Oaks, California. Their parents are David Olsen and Jarnette (Jarnie) Jones. Ashley is two minutes older than Mary-Kate. They have an older brother, Trent, and a younger sister, actress Elizabeth Olsen. They also have a half-sister, Courtney Taylor, and a half-brother, Jake, from their father's second marriage.
In 1987, when they were just six months old, the twins were chosen to play Michelle Tanner on the TV show Full House. They started filming when they were nine months old. Because of rules about how long child actors can work, the sisters took turns playing Michelle. They continued in this role until the show ended in 1995.
Movies and TV Shows
While they were still on Full House, Mary-Kate and Ashley also started appearing in their own movies and videos. Their first movie was To Grandmother's House We Go in 1992. In 1993, they started their own company, Dualstar. This company produced many of their later films and videos, like Double, Double, Toil and Trouble (1993) and How the West Was Fun (1994). They also had a series of musical mystery videos called The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley.
After Full House ended, the Olsens made their first big movie, It Takes Two, in 1995. They also started another video series called You're Invited to Mary-Kate & Ashley's....
They continued to star in many direct-to-video movies like Billboard Dad (1998), Passport to Paris (1999), and Our Lips Are Sealed (2000). They also had another TV show called Two of a Kind (1998–1999). In 2001, they starred in two new series: So Little Time and an animated show called Mary-Kate and Ashley in Action!. Mary-Kate was even nominated for an award for her role in So Little Time.
Their last movie together was New York Minute in 2004. After this, Ashley stopped acting, but Mary-Kate continued to appear in some films and TV shows for a few more years.
Becoming Teen Icons
Mary-Kate and Ashley were incredibly popular with kids and preteens in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Their names and faces were on many products, not just movies and videos. You could find their names on clothes, shoes, books, CDs, makeup, magazines, games, dolls, and even phones! They had a fan club called "Mary-Kate & Ashley's Fun Club" where fans could get special items and magazines.
When they turned 18 in 2004, the sisters became the co-presidents of Dualstar. They worked to make the company appeal to teens by creating home decor and perfumes. Dualstar products were sold in thousands of stores around the world. In 2007, Forbes magazine said they were among the richest women in entertainment, with a lot of money.
Later, when a new show called Fuller House (a spin-off of Full House) was made, the Olsen twins did not return to play Michelle. This was because they had moved on to their fashion careers.
Fashion Career
Starting Their Own Style
As the sisters grew up, they became very interested in fashion. Mary-Kate became known as a fashion icon for her unique "homeless" or "bohemian-bourgeois" style. This look often included oversized sunglasses, boots, loose sweaters, and flowing skirts, mixing expensive and affordable clothes. In 2006, they became the faces of the fashion brand Badgley Mischka.
The Olsens also had a clothing line for girls aged 4–14 at Wal-Mart stores. They also had a beauty line. In 2004, they made news by promising to give full maternity leave to all the workers who sewed their clothing line in Bangladesh. This showed their commitment to workers' rights.
Luxury Brands and Awards
The Olsens launched their own high-end fashion brand, The Row, in 2006. The name comes from Savile Row in London, which is famous for its custom-made suits. In 2007, they started another collection called Elizabeth & James, which was inspired by their own vintage clothes. They also created a clothing line for J.C. Penney called Olsenboye and a T-shirt line called "StyleMint".
In 2008, the sisters published a book called Influence. It was a collection of interviews with many important people in the fashion world.
The Olsens have won several awards for their fashion work. They were named Womenswear Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) for The Row in 2012 and again in 2015. They also won the Accessories Designer of the Year award in 2014 and 2018 for their work with The Row.
