Matthew Moy was born and grew up in San Francisco, California. His family has been in America for many generations, coming from China. He went to the University of California, Davis. There, he studied Japanese and also learned about linguistics, which is the study of language. His dad was a high school teacher, and his mom helped people with language. He has one older sister.

Matthew Moy has appeared in many TV shows. Some of these include How I Met Your Mother, Criminal Minds, Zeke and Luther, Good Luck Charlie, and Kickin' It. He also played Shawn the Mathlete on iCarly. He was Trang in the ninth season of Scrubs.

He also made guest appearances on Big Time Rush as a famous blogger named Deke. On The Middle, he played Takayuki, a Japanese foreign exchange student. He also voices Lars Barriga on the Cartoon Network show Steven Universe. People have praised his voice acting in this role.

From 2011 to 2017, Moy was a main actor on the CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls. He played the character Han Lee. Later, in 2017, Matthew Moy was cast as Zack Smith, also known as Microbe, in a show called Marvel's New Warriors. A pilot episode was filmed, but the show was not picked up by the network.

This included using a cane to walk on set and re-learning to write with his right hand. He has now made a full recovery. He kept this private from the public until 2017.
