Matzingen was first written about in the year 779. Back in the High Middle Ages, which was a long time ago, a noble family called the Freiherr of Matzingen had the power to make small legal decisions for the area. Later, in 1402, another group called Sonnenberg started to rule the village. They stayed in charge until 1798.

In 894, Matzingen had a church that was part of a bigger church in Wängi. At first, a place called the Abbey of St. Gall chose the priest for the church. But in 1401, the Commandry of Tobel took over this right. Matzingen became its own separate church area, called a parish, in 1508. Then, in 1529, the people of Matzingen changed their religion to the new Reformed faith.

For many years, the main jobs in Matzingen were farming, growing fruit, and making wine from grapes. Wine-making stopped in 1908. After 1850, people also started raising animals and making dairy products like milk and cheese. Matzingen had a mill for grinding grain for a very long time, from 1150 to 1996.

New businesses started to appear. In 1863, a pottery factory opened. Then, in 1866, a spinning mill started, which later became a weaving factory in 1878. When the Frauenfeld-Wil railroad came to Matzingen in 1887, it helped even more new companies to start, like a furniture factory. In 1919, a factory that made cider opened. In the 1950s, this factory made a popular drink called Halb-halb, which was half orange juice and half cider.

A workshop that fixed farm machines started in 1948. This workshop grew into a big company called Gehring Cut AG. Today, this company makes parts for cars and medical equipment. In 1970, the A1 Motorway was built through Matzingen. This new road made it easy for companies that work with metal and packaging to move to Matzingen. Because of all these new jobs, the number of people living in Matzingen doubled between 1965 and 2000.
