History of Max, North Dakota
How Max Got Its Start
Before 1906, people heard that the Soo Line was going to build train tracks near Elbow Lake. This area was north of Garrison. The railroad needed water for its steam engines.
Because of this news, smart business people quickly started claiming land. They hoped to buy good real estate in a new town. Soon, many simple shacks were built on the nearby prairies. On August 8, 1906, a surveyor named J.G. Sheldrick officially mapped out the area. This map showed how the town of Max would be laid out in a grid pattern.
The Name "Max"
The Soo Line railroad came from the south. It was planned to have train lines going both east and west at a special spot called a junction. This junction was going to be named "Junction" or "Junction City."
However, people started calling it "Max's Post Office." This was because of Max Freitag, the oldest son of Paul Freitag. Paul Freitag was a local farmer and the very first postmaster (the person in charge of a post office). Max would ask people coming to the junction if they were visiting "his" post office to get their mail.
The name, shortened to just Max, became popular. Even though it wasn't official at first, the name stuck. Later, the town was moved about two miles west to where it is now. At that time, the name was officially changed to Max.
Modern Improvements in Max
In January 1918, the Central Light and Power Company put in street lights. This made the town much brighter at night.
In 1947, the people of Max decided to officially become an incorporated city. This meant the city would be managed by an elected mayor and a council of four aldermen. Aldermen are like city council members who help make decisions for the town.
In the early 1950s, Max got many new updates. These included a new telephone system and better fire equipment. The town also improved its waterworks, which brings water to homes. They installed new water mains (pipes for water) and a sewerage system to handle wastewater.
