Miguel Luís Pinto Veloso (born on May 11, 1986) is a Portuguese former professional footballer. He mostly played as a defensive midfielder. He could also play as an attacking left-back.
Miguel started his career with Sporting CP in Portugal. He played 156 games for them. He also spent many years in Italy with Genoa and Hellas Verona. He played 214 matches in Serie A, Italy's top league. During his four years with Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine, he won four major trophies.
Miguel played for the Portuguese national team from 2007 to 2015. He played 56 games for his country. He also played in two World Cups and two European Championships. He announced his retirement from playing football in September 2024.

Club Career Highlights
Miguel Veloso began his football journey in Coimbra, Portugal. He first joined S.L. Benfica's youth team. However, he was later rejected because he was a bit overweight. At age 14, he joined the youth system of Sporting CP, a rival club in Lisbon. He started as a central defender.
Playing for Sporting CP
To get more playing time, Miguel was loaned to C.D. Olivais e Moscavide. This team was in the third division. He helped them get promoted to the second division. He scored seven goals, which was his best record at the time.
After this, Sporting CP called him back. He played 23 matches in the Primeira Liga during the 2006–07 season. His team finished second that year. He also played very well in his first UEFA Champions League game. Sporting won 1–0 against Inter Milan. Miguel was named Player of the match for his great performance.
In the 2007–08 season, Miguel was a key player in Sporting's midfield. He played alongside João Moutinho. Sporting finished second in the league again. Miguel helped Sporting reach the last 16 in the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League. He scored in both games against Everton.
Time in Italy and Ukraine
On July 30, 2010, Miguel Veloso moved to Genoa CFC in Italy. He played his first Serie A game on August 28, winning 1–0 against Udinese Calcio. His first goal for Genoa was on September 11, 2011. It was in a 2–2 draw against Atalanta BC.
Miguel then moved to Ukraine. On July 4, 2012, he signed a four-year contract with FC Dynamo Kyiv. He played 127 games for them and scored 14 goals. He won four major titles with Dynamo Kyiv. This included winning both the league and the cup in the 2014–15 season.
On July 31, 2016, Miguel returned to Genoa. He played for them for two more years. He left the club in 2018 but came back shortly after.
Playing for Hellas Verona
Miguel Veloso signed a one-year contract with Hellas Verona FC on July 20, 2019. He scored a free kick in his first game on August 25. This goal helped his team draw 1–1 with Bologna FC 1909. He scored more goals that season, matching his best record for a top-flight season.
In June 2020, Miguel agreed to play a second season with Hellas Verona. He scored two more goals and renewed his contract again. He became the team's captain in 2020. He signed another one-year contract in April 2022.
Final Club: Pisa
On August 2, 2023, at 37 years old, Miguel joined Pisa SC in Italy's Serie B league. He signed a one-year deal. In September 2024, he announced he was retiring from playing football. He immediately became an assistant manager at Pisa SC.
International Career

Miguel Veloso was the captain for the Portugal Under-17 team. He led them to victory in the 2003 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. They beat Spain 2–1 in the final. Miguel was named the tournament's best player. He also helped the team reach the quarter-finals of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup that same year.
On August 14, 2007, Miguel was called up to the senior national team for the first time. He made his debut against Azerbaijan on October 13. He played in the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament.
Miguel scored his first international goal on October 14, 2009. It was in a 4–0 win against Malta during a World Cup qualifying match. He was chosen for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He played briefly in two group stage games.
On November 15, 2011, Miguel scored from a free kick. Portugal defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 6–2. This win helped Portugal qualify for UEFA Euro 2012. He played every minute of Portugal's games in that tournament.
At the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Miguel played in the opening game against Germany. He also played as a left-back in the final group game against Ghana. Portugal won 2–1, but it was not enough to move to the next round.
In September 2015, Miguel was called back to the national team. On September 7, he scored the only goal in a Euro 2016 qualifier against Albania. He headed the ball into the net in the 92nd minute.

Miguel Veloso's father, António, was also a famous footballer. He was a defender and played for Benfica for many years. He also played for the Portuguese national team.
In 2013, Miguel Veloso married Paola, who is the daughter of Genoa's club president, Enrico Preziosi. Their son was born in 2016.
